There is always this idea that you must pick a side. You must defend a side. You must become a fanboy. There always must be a winner and a loser.

    Why?

    Nikon wins over Canon.
    HP wins dell loses.
    LTE wins wimax loses.

Are we that programmed from commercials that we have to become a fanboy on everything?

Even where I work. Samsung cards are better then broadcomm, why? No reason they just are. Everyone seems to view everything as a win/lose, us/them, and UK/Germany thing. They really dont seem to care about anything as long as their side is "winning"?

Why? In the forums here, everyone says the same thing, LTE is the future, wimax is not? I ask why? Most of the time they just shut up and never answer. Some of the time they just spew off marketing and napkin information, and run away. Why did they think LTE was better, because that was their team. Someone told them it was better. I get the same responses out of coworks when I ask why is Denver better then New York, or UK better then Germany.

    No reason, they just are.

So why do you guys think we do this?

And yes I know about the android/apple thread, different subject.

Human nature forces us to divide into "us" and "them". It's a trait that helped early man survive, and provides a purpose for most internet forums for modern man.

It is natural. There are products I will defend until death because they are better; in most cases, demonstrably so. For example, back in the day, the Hasselblad SWC and the Leica M3 were superior cameras to other brands like Bronica and Nikon and Cannon. Costly, but better.

I could defend my views because I have considerable experience working with the negatives produced by all major brands and I could demonstrate why my statements were valid with simple tests. The proof was in the 11x14 Cibachrome of the pudding.

This would not sit well with Nikon buyers that spent a fortune to get the "best" camera and did not want to hear that if ultimate quality was the goal, the answer was not Nikon, it was a more costly camera. Rather than agree, they found ways to justify their purchase, and they managed to find problems with a Leicaflex that had nothing to do with the simple fact that Leica cameras are clearly better.

Like its high cost, non-standard (in some cases) filters, or extremely costly polarizers compared to Tiffen or some other.

But it is the worse camera for those that wanted to snap a few family pictures and perhaps buy a nice Zoom lens.

Or my love of Kodachrome. Clearly sharper and the colors were always accurate but it was "crap" because "I need slides in an hour and I can't process it myself or locally, so it sucks" they would often say. Does not change the fact: Kodachrome was a superior film.

Sometimes we argue and fight because we are Fanboys and we suffer buyer's remorse. Or we have faith that this is better than that and no amount of proof will change their minds. Or, we need to justify our decisions by bashing others because that is what some of us like to do. Or we simply hate fanboys because many are so aggravating. Some of us are simple jerks and some are undereducated and simply do not know any better.

Some of us, like me, simply say I bought the iPad because it was needed and it was the only product that could meet my specific needs at the time. That is all I need to say. Or I went with Criket and the Zio because I hate contracts, the price was right, and it works for me.
