My Nexus 7 2013 is set to switch the WiFi off when the cover of the case is closed and puts it to sleep, but I have noticed that even though it's asleep Gmail downloads emails and sounds a little chime. I have searched but I cannot find any setting relating to this matter, I would be very thankful for any assistance.

I think that is a battery saving option, but will still allow apps like mail, facebook, etc to periodically wake wifi. I think you would need to use a tasking app (like Tasker) to set up a rule to actually turn wifi on/off with the screen.

Thank you for your reply, I'll take a look at Tasker and see if that can help.
