Help Why is Google Play draining my battery?

Within the past few months I've noticed that my battery seems to be draining significantly faster than usual, even when my phone is just sitting on my desk not doing anything. I installed better battery stats and found this:

NlpWakeLock
Google Play Services
48 m 32 s (2912 s) Count:2516 5.7%

Google Play Services has the #1 NlpWakeLock count.

The built in battery monitor reports that "Google play services" is the number 1 battery consumer with 22% of the total.

What is going on here? Why would Google Play be using so much battery power?

I read that its because the new Google Play Services app encompasses more "stuff" than before so shows as a higher percentage but shouldnt cause faster drain time in total.
Take it youve cleared its cache and data?

Have you tried turning off auto updates in Google Play?
