Hey guys , I was thinking of getting a Desire soon so I've been searching it up a bit and found out it can be used as a wifi hotspot. I was just wondering if you had to root it to be able to?

    Hi,

I am not rooted and have a standard Orange Froyo 2.2 ROM and I use the wifi hotspot all the time when staying in hotel rooms.

As long as I have a good 3g connection it works great.

Do you have to download an app from the marketplace or will it come with the device?

It's possible it could depend on your carrier ... some carriers in the US charge extra for WiFi hotspot, so they may exclude the stock Froyo program. It's simply called "WiFi Hotspot" in your app drawer if you have it.

Vodafone in the UK charge extra for using WiFi hotspot.

Rooting allows you to tether which is free in itself. I heard the networks can take issue with tethering although I'm not sure about it. Others might have more experience with it.

You may want to check with Orange that you're not being charged, if by wifi hotspot you mean tethering...

I rang them about purchasing a usb dongle and whilst on the phone I said 'is there any point in using a dongle when I have tethering on my Desire?'

The rep said that even if you use it once in a month you will be charged the monthly tarriff for doing so.....

Look on your next bill for an increase in charges....

I'm probably going to get it on 3 so does anyone here have any idea if they charge you?

As has been said, it depends on the mobile network.

I use wifi hotspot on o2 and it's counted as part of your data allowance. As the other reply above suggests, that's the same with Orange, but Vodafone apparently charge extra. If this is an important feature for you it's probably best to speak to the customer services dept of the network you're planning to go with the check beforehand.

    Hi,

I've had problems with Orange in the past so I check my bill online often and I've never been charged for using the Wifi hotspot. It just uses up some of my monthly data allowance. (and unless using for youtube videos it really doesn't each much into my data allowance)
