I have read forum after forum for a solution to my wifi problem. My Samsung Galaxy S3 keeps turning the Wifi on. This is a straight talk phone and does not have "optimizer" as so many times I have read that. I have uninstalled many apps, removed some apps, and even have uninstalled updates to other apps thinking that could be the problem. No success. Any ideas? I have done everything except for a factory reset. Any ideas?

Are you sure you looked in the right place for the connection optimizer setting? IIRC it was in the mobile data settings, not wifi.

Yes, I have checked that. The only option I have there is "enable access over mobile network... If I shut that off, I can't use data at all.

My Straight Talk GS3 is currently doing the same thing, not to mention even after I've forgotten all of my WiFi hotspots, it will automatically reconnect me to the open ones. I tried scanning for viruses, removing apps, and even removing certain files in fear of malicious bugs. Nothing has worked so far. It keeps turning itself on, and everything dealing with the WiFi searching, Google location, and everything else I've already disabled.

Alright, I did a little digging around and think I found the cause to your problem! The Straight Talk my account app will turn wifi on every time you unlock the phone. The only solution offered where I read this was to freeze or uninstall the app.

It took me a while to figure out that connection optimizer was doing this same thing on my phone. So I understand how frustrating it can be.. Funny fact; HTC evo 3d actually shuts off wifi after a certain time that used to cause me extreme amounts of frustration.

Thank you for replying with the solution! I uninstalled the app, it turns out they added the automated connection but weren't intelligent enough to add a disabling switch.

I just had the same problem last night and I have gone through, literately, hundreds of posts and this is the first one to offer the correct solution.

    Thank you for helping.

I cleared the data in the app manager and it fixed the problem. I then removed the app because... well... that should be obvious.

On a side note, I've had this phone since around June of 2014 and never had this problem. But my DSL went down for a week (Thank you Verizon) and I had to use the S3 for all of my normal net stuff.

Isn't it funny that when my data usage spiked, but was still way under their bar, they decided to force my wifi on? Maybe to get me to, unknowingly, use wifi whenever possible rather than their data? Which would certainly be to their benefit. Seems a little slick to me... but still, I'm happy with my service and I can afford it... so at least now I know that I need to keep an eye on them a little bit. ;)

I guess this is why I can't use my S3 as a hotspot as well... which really would have helped during the outage.

Thanks again guys. Y'all are great (yes, I said y'all) and I'll try to check in here when I can.

If you're rooted, the app WiFi Tether Router in the playstore should work. Its a paid app (like 3 or 4 bucks), but totally worth it.

Thank you. I am too. Couldn't have done it without you guys. :)
Thanks for the advice. I've considered rooting the phone but I'm a bit leery of doing it in case Straight Talk has some kind of thing against it or might consider it a violation of some type. And while I've never done anything like that before and would be a total newbie to it, it is rattling around in the back of my mind.

Root is exactly the same as having admin access on your pc.

A lot of power, a lot of responsibility.

They can and often do void your warranty if you root.

Beyond that, the law won't allow them to stop you.

Some carriers have tried to make anti-rooting a contract clause - when challenged, the courts have found the contract unconscionable - no good.

    Rooting isn't for everyone.

The first rule of rooting is to read, read, read and then read some more.

Ask questions in the rooting forum BEFORE you start.

We've all been there, everyone will be cool with it.

Get the facts, do it right, don't screw up your phone.

No problem answering questions you have, no one digs a hosed phone.

And if rooting isn't for you, no big deal - it's not for everyone. ;) :)

  15. Thank you very much. I have been working for hours trying everything I could find and read about. Nothing worked. Then I googled galaxy s3 keeps coming on straightalk and up popped this forum's q & a. So I cleared the data/cache from the My Account Straightalk app and so far no more wi-fi. Unlike others, the Wi-Fi issue started happening after having my phone for 8 months or so. I can not think of anything that I did or nor was my data plan used more to cause the wifi to come on by itself. So did Straightalk just initiate something? Don't know. So for now I have kept the My Account Straightalk app on my phone just cleaned the data out of the app and all is working great now. I will see how long this lasts. If I have to remove the app I will, but so far so good. Again, THANK YOU ALL very much. I could have never figured this out.

Thanks for the rooting advice. I'll look into it. Not sure if I'm ready just yet... but... LOL

I sent Straight Talk an email about it before I found this thread. They replied asking me to call to discuss it with them on the phone. I wonder if I should... :)
