hi guys u am looking for an app that will be able to manage connections of other user's on my network ,that will enable me to set data limits for those user's and will cut them off once that particular limit is reached etc. ?

I'd start with the web management portal for your router.. some reading of the manual may be required.

No. As others have said, you do this on your router.

But you may have a hard time finding something that will allow you to limit per user access.

The sort of things to look for are "QoS" (quality of service), Access Control, even Parental Controls.

Very true. I am familiar with the Netgear range of routers and people ask regularly for the ability to limit "bandwidth" on a per user basis. But that feature is not widely available.

You can use to give some uses, and maybe users, priority over what goes on. But something that says "Uh oh, this one has used too much this month, turn them off" is rare.

I know some.... Including ddwrt ... Would allow working in a ticketed portal mode ... So may be able to do it that way.

Many will allow per device time restrictions...

Some may show usage per device... So you can smack the person in question with a stick once they get too high.


You also might be able to set up a guest network with a limited total bandwidth cap.


But it depends on what real world problem youre trying to address

guests at a lodge I would like to give them limited access to the network, so a set amount of data usage for the duration of the stay or perhaps per day !

As already mentioned, you have to use your router's configuration setup to manage this. An app on your phone or a utility running on a Win PC can only access the router's settings, but neither one has the ability to do what you're asking on their own.

I think it is because the answer lies in your router, and the method's availability and implementation would be dependent on the router.

I've never met a hotel which restricts the amount of data up/downloaded. Plenty that do it by time (per day or week - it's a long time since I saw one that bothered with smaller increments than a day), e.g. by giving a login that's only valid for some period. But I've only used such systems, never set one up.

Mind you, a ship is probably using a satellite link, so their bandwidth could be quite limited.

Airlines do the same thing with in-flight WiFi via satellite, usually you buy a fixed amount data. Can be really expensive as well, like $5 USD for 5MB.
But this is different to trying to configure a router for limited or metered data in a hotel or something.
