I have the TB and have used it for 1 week. My wife had one and exchanged it for an Iphone. I am on the fence and have to make my final decision in the next 72 hours (need to go on a trip for sick mother-in-law up to a week). So have to make final decision by Saturday/Sunday.

I love the phone except for the battery life. In addition I love the fact that I could tether down the road with this phone.

I know that with the current factory setup, I will exchange it for an Iphone. My hope was that there would be an update by now from HTC/VZN but that isn't happening. So, I am willing to hire somebody (I realize $50 isn't much for many) but maybe an experienced hacker/programmer can help me.

    I would like to:

    1) Backup the existing software/Rom/RUU//radio/Kernel/???? [no idea what is the correct terminology]
    2) Update the phone to an unrooted version. Test it for a day and see if the battery life is better than the 4-6 hours I am getting now with minimum apps (no wifi & no bluetooth).
    3) Be able to revert it back to factory and exchange for iphone if unhappy during test period.

Is this possible? If so, anybody up for the challenge?

If so, please email me at atwnsw@gmail.com

    Am I dreaming?

Thanks in advance for your advice, help and consideration.

    Anthony

I am not sure how busy you are but with a Saturday afternoon you can do it by yourself for free. These forums are here to help you as they have me. I do not post alot but I have been here for awhile and reading these forums have helped me and many others. I hope you can find the answers you need and remember the search button is your friend. I would only suggest that you do a fair amount of research if you have not already to make sure its truly the way you want to go.

Check out this link [Auto] Root and Unroot (Windows)**Updated**4/23 - Android Forums

I did my phone and my wife's phone using this method. This is my first Android phone at it worked great.

Best part is, DroidXcon is very helpful. Went out of his way several times to walk me though it all. It's very overwhelming at first but not so bad after you're done.

    Good luck

Dude, no need to pay anyone. Save your money. I don't know any terminology and am hardly experienced. But within the past 2 days i have rooted twice, loaded 4 different roms, and have my phone looking awesome. All thanks to the people on this and the AndroidCentral forums. If i can do it, you can do it.

Anthony, Go to Android Police and look up how to root your thunderbolt and if you go to Emily or Gary's questions (scroll Down) you can see EXACTLY how to root your phone. I held both of their hands from beginning to end and spoke in a language they could both understand. I'm Dave and you'll see a LOT of my posts back to back because I was answering their questions along the way.
If you still need help (you wont) then let me know and I'll be happy to help and I do not charge fellow members on the boards anything. I was taught by nice helpful people and as long as you agree to help others when you can (later when this is easy for you) then we all win.

My battery got better after about 4 charges. Bump charge the battery every morning. Always charge from your AC charger , and avoid the car charger if possible.

To bump charge means that once the led turns green. unplug the phone., turn it off, and charge it again till its green. then if you have time(I usually don't ) you can unplug turn it on and charge again.

I'msure the battery life will get better over time with updates. I got 34 hours last weekend off of one charge, but I average about 12 when Im using the phone alot.

Now the ironic thing is that if you do a google search you will see that people are also complaining about the iphone4 battery. There was a test done and the battery lasted about 4 hours when doing downloads, streaming and watching videos. link to the test http://www.pcworld.com/article/200298/iphone_4_battery_life_the_test_results_are_in.html

What it boils down to is no matter what smartphone you have.. If your using it heavily your only gonna get a few hours out of it. i.e using gps, playing games, streaming videos.

To the OP... I was on here a few weeks ago soliciting to pay someone to root my T-Bolt. Using ADB and a command prompt intimidated me and I assumed I couldn't do it because I don't normally work at that high of tech level.

Everybody gave me the same advice you are getting here. Dive in today and get it done. I have a Mac, and this is how I did it: [HOWTO] Getting root on your Thunderbolt from start to finish - Mac OS X - xda-developers. You can follow this same guide using a PC, just go to your command prompt (Start>Run> then type in "Command" and the command prompt window will pop up), just leave off the "./". There are many people here and over on XDA who can literally walk you through this when you get stuck.

Trading in your T-Bolt for an IDon't could well be the worst mistake you make this year. Don't blow it. Your wife's IDon't is nowhere near the phone you have with your TBolt. There are many ROMs now that are very good, and CyanogenMod is out now in pre-Alpha form (being tested by a lot of us), and even in it's alpha state is so much better than a stock TBolt that I can hardly believe that most people don't take the time to learn this stuff and master their device. I'm not an expert, just a user like you who wanted a better experience with my smartphone than what the stock device could offer. Now, I wouldn't take a phone I could not root even if I was paid to do so. :D

I had the same exact decision to make. I got a Droid X and thought it wasn't for me because I was missing a few important features. I almost convinced myself to go get an iPhone. Eventually, I discovered a lot could become of this phone if it is rooted, so I ended up getting a TB instead of an iPhone.

There is no need to pay anyone for what you want. If you really need someone to sort of walk you through it because you are uncomfortable rushing because of the time constraints, I'm sure someone here or at XDA will help you. It is intimidating to get started, but the community is extremely helpful. My wife also wanted an iPhone, she loves the TB now and wouldn't change to iPhone if someone paid her. Neither would I.

If I felt confident enough rooting, I would step you through it myself, but I'm a noobie too, so hopefully someone with the right skills will help you out.

I am happy to help anyone get rooted.
If you need help go to androidpolice.com and then go to how to root a thunderbolt, then scroll down to where you see David and/or Dave and you will see several of my "HOLD YOUR HAND THROUGH" the processes. Otherwise let me know and I'll help you and I will not charge anyone!!!

I thought rooting generally didn't require changing the firmware version running on the phone. Yet the method described in links from here make it sound like you're reverting to an older firmware.

How do you apply the leaked update after rooting?
Can the Verizon OTA update work if the phone is rooted without a custom ROM?
How do you undo rooting and make it stock to unvoid the warranty?

Hey Joey!! I told you it was addicting.

I installed several roms and came across Virus in the XDA thunderbolt rom list.
It is awesome!! I then loaded ziggy's newest mecca bfs 050111 kernal and I'm thrilled. He does such great work on these roms and the one that I used on the Virus Rom was great but had proximity sensor issues so that's why I tried ziggys new kernal (ziggy created the one attached to Virus Airbornes rom) and no issues whatsoever!!!

Have fun and I'm happy to help anyone!!

I am terrified to root. First, I am not technically savvy at all, and I'm sure I'll brick my phone if I even attempt it. Secondly, some of the jargon confounds me.

I've dipped my toe into this forum to decide if I want to try, but I don't even know what all these ROM's, kernals, etc even do, and why/how they will improve my overall experience. Heck, even Launcher Pro intimidates me. I've gotten Beautiful Widgets down so that I'm comfortable with that, and I've been playing around with Folder Organizer (I know, these are probably like Elementary School is to College Level work comparing them at all to what I can do with rooting).

However, I'm sorely tempted to try, but then I scare myself off of it again.

I think I'll hang out here some more more and try to build up some courage.

If you want some help. Just ask. There is no turning back. (well, actually you can). You just wont want to. I rooted mine a couple of months ago and there is no way I'll ever go back. I knew nothing of this just a few short months ago.
Let me know when you're ready. I've helped many get rooted because I'm PATIENT!!!!

Ok. I wont let you brick your T-Bolt when you're ready.
Doing STUPID things like messing with your bios is a way to do that. Most of the roms out there wont let you in there anyway.
