Wondering about mobile hotspot security

Hi and thanks in advance for reading

I recently purchased an older smartphone, Samsung S8 Active
I know that older phones are more vulnerable to hackers, so I don't plan on doing any online banking from my phone or anything else that I would worry about security wise.
My question is, if I use my phone as a mobile hotspot, would that connection be safe enough for sensitive data or would it be just as vulnerable to attackers?

I would suggest using a VPN, so that you shouldn't need to have such worries.
