Word of warning, not so scratch resistant

    Hey all,

Just wanted to warn everybody who may have had fears calmed by some key scratch test videos. Its always alone when I put it in my pants pocket, never tossed in with keys or change. I felt pretty good about it myself after seeing the videos and didn't think twice about putting it in my coat pocket along with my ID proxy card for work. Well long story short, the ID card is attached to a plastic circle with a metal belt clip. The clip is not sharp or even very hard for that matter but it put an inch long scratch running parallel to the status bar, right below it.

The scratch isn't deep and its only visible when the light hits it right and on dark backgrounds. When I turned up my screen brightness and tested different angles I couldn't see it. Nothing major, just a downer seeing a scratch when its laying on my desk and the screen is off. So those who go without screen protectors, use extra caution! I know I will be from now on

Sorry to hear about the scratch. The first thing I do when I get a new phone is put on a screen protector even before turning it on for the first time.

    Yup same here.

I don't care what any manufacture claims about scratch resistance (its not scratch proof) I am still putting a cover on it. Anyone who thinks it wont scratch is being foolish.

That's funny because I have never had a scratch on my iPhone.

I was the same way with my Dinc. I threw that thing into any pocket I had available, dropped it a few times face down on concrete and gravel; It came away without a scratch for it's whole life. I had just thought after the video tests this would be nearly the same resistance but I guess not.

I also understand there are those that live and die by screen protectors, to each their own. I enjoy using my phones without one, just looking to warn those who are like me.

Yeah thanks for not using kleenex brand tissues as well!!! :p

I've seen gorilla glass all scratched up so really it's just a brand name thing.

used the protector i got with the diztronic case. Doesnt fit the entire screen well, but it's some form of protection at least.

I don't know whats funny about it as I have seen plenty of scratched iphones, you must take very good care of yours. Just don't be fooled into thinking that its scratch proof.

Keys or knives don't scratch the screen because metal isn't as hard as glass. What will scratch the glass however is a single spec of dirt caught in your badge clip. Dirt has several different components in it and several of these are harder then glass and will easily scratch it.

had a small scratch on mine 2 days after buying it. It's been in nothing but pockets by itself. I was pretty upset, but there's nothing to do at this point. It's only noticeable at certain angles in certain light (much more so outside during the day) and isn't visible during use, but it's the principle of the thing. I wasn't babying it, but I was careful and not 2 days in it's got a scratch that's likely permanent.

I'm waiting for an XO screen protector to arrive. Didn't use one on my X and had no problems. Only used one my Incredible for a month before I got rid of it.

^ This. Everyone needs to understand this.

Glass is hard stuff. Gorilla Glass/fortified glass is even harder. HOWEVER, there are a lot of substances that we encounter in our daily lives that are harder than glass and will scratch it easily - sand is the most common one, since quartz (which sand is primarily composed of) ranks higher on the mohs hardness scale than even fortified glass.

Additionally, even softer materials can scratch glass if they are pressed hard enough against the glass. It's not as common, of course (hence all the scratch "tests" that claim to test scratch resistance when just about any glass would survive the soft metals being pushed against them), but it can happen.

Just because you didn't have a scratch on <insert phone here> doesn't mean it had anything to do with the quality of the glass. I had two iPhones and two Droid Xs. One of each ended up with a scratch on the screen. We're talking about random events here, where sand or dirt gets in the right place, at the right time, and is pushed against the glass in the right way.

My OG Droid that I got the day it came out never got scratched and I never used a screen protector. I'm taking my chances with my new GNX.

That sucks. I was scared to hold my phone without a case and screen protector. At first I thought the screen is curved might not get scratched as much. Then I took it out from its protective box and had second thoughts

No screens are truly scratch resistant including the gorilla glass phones. Nothing can can withstand the fury of sand!

One day though maybe we will truly have it though, if not I would rather have screens we could just replace

My fiance had a handful of scratches on her Iphone 4 days after getting it. Nevertheless, she decided to put a screen protector on it to protect from future damage.

Moral of the story: It's possible to scratch an Iphone 4.

Umm, its called a screen protector... Easily replaceable and much cheaper than replacing an entire screen.

I for one, always run a screen protector. I just don't see the sense in letting something get all scratched up that you paid $300 for...

Every glass screen CAN be scratched. This is fact, just go to the beach with your Nexus, and tell me what happens next :D (Not directed at you Shockwave)

used an iphone 2g for almost 3 years, never a scratch without a screen protector. same with my htc inc, and moto bionic.

samsung seems to have the software/hardware aspect of phones under control pretty well, but for some reason make the phone's body out of the cheapest looking materials known to man.....

Yup I assume that any phone can be scratched gorilla glass or not. I don't really like screen protectors so I always put my phone into my pocket carefully (not super slowly just don't throw your phone in there) and don't put anything in the same pocket as the phone. If I absolutely had to I would only put in objects with no sharp edges and make sure it is touching the back cover not the screen.

Registered just to chime in, but mine came with a scratch already on it. It was about 1/8" by the front camera lens. I looked at the plastic that came on the front and noticed a scratch in the exact location. Thankfully, Verizon was very cool about it and sent me replacement, which I just got. I'm now leaning towards a screen protector.
