Root Yet ANOTHER problem w/ my old man's phone

My father, whose phone I rooted (no custom ROM, though) when he got his EVO LTE in mid-June, is having yet another problem with his phone. (BTW, this is his 3rd such EVO LTE since that date.) Whenever he makes a call, the person whom he calls cannot hear him, but he can clearly hear the party whom he has called. In addition, when he receives a call, he cannot answer it. He continually presses the green "answer" button, but it doesn't pick up, resulting in the call eventually going to voice mail.

I've checked every setting I could, even matching his settings to mine exactly. That does nothing. I've tried to reboot to recovery to try something that way, but I cannot get into recovery; instead, the dreaded red triangle appears.

Anyone have any idea as to what may be causing his audio issue? FYI, he did NOT take the latest OTA update or do anything else that might otherwise screw up his phone.

He said that if this turns out to be a mechanical issue, he's "done with the EVO and anything made by HTC."

Your dreaded red triangle is just the stock HTC recovery. What did you use to root him? You can still wipe cache from within stock recovery(theres a button combo to mash, hopefully someone else can step in here). I would try that first.

If that doesn't work, do a factory reset.

If that doesnt work, get a radio test done at sprint.

I thought I had pressed the correct button combination to get to stock recovery, but it appears I did not, because that red triangle keeps showing.

As far as which root method, I used the Zedomax one, primarily because at the time, it was the only method available. The other ones came out shortly thereafter, but I didn't do anything further to his phone.

As far as a radio test @ Sprint, should his phone be unrooted first, to remove the "tampered" message that normally shows on rooted phones?

That red triangle IS the recovery. That's all it is. It's not meant to be used by us.

I believe if you push power plus volume up and down at the same time you'll get a menu

You don't need to unroot it. I told them I was rooted and not to touch my software in any way.

Well, I get to the red triangle, but I can't do anything once there. BTW, that's the combination of buttons I used, but it got me to the red triangle.

Dang, I know there's a hidden menu there, but I've never been on the stock recovery long enough to ever need to use it.

Would your father be opposed to a factory reset?

OK, I was able to get into recovery. It was just a question of remembering to push which buttons once the red triangle was present.

The old man's in the car with me, so I was able to try a factory reset. No success. No audio emanating from his phone on any made/received calls. All other audio functions work fine.
