I have tried TubeDroid and Youtube Ripper, and in both the native media player is unable to play the downloaded files. :(

Are there any other apps out there that can download youtube vids so that I can play them on the Desire's native player?

    Thanks.

I agree with Iango, Youtube Ripper works fine for me. It downloads the videos to a folder on your SD card called Youtube, I can either find them using Astro and play them from there or move them into my videos folder if I want to get to them through the Photos / videos app.

Thanks, but this is what I've been trying to do. Each time it says "the file you are playing is not supported".. :(
Maybe there's an update since I last tried? I'll download again...

Thanks for the Youtube Ripper suggestion , stumbled across this thread and thought that would be useful to me for downloading guitar lessons onto my phone from Youtube . I already have Astro File manager and as the guy says it creates a YouTube file in Astro and it was very simple to do .

Any reason why you are trying to use the Native Player?

RockPlayer is better, failing that YXFlash works too.

    It's a philosophy: no bloatware ;)

I don't install anything unless absolutely necessary. I never have 2 apps that perform the same function. Plus on the desire it just eats up too much space.. :(

I use Freedi to download stuff from YouTube. Inbuilt player does just fine with what it saves.

Videobox is also another good option. Rockplayer however imho is the more robust playback solution.
