I want to root my phone so that I can erase the stock apps but I'm afraid of doing a permanent root because it seems really complicated and I don't want to brick-ify my phone. I temporarily rooted through z4root but I don't know how to erase the annoying apps such as Nascar, Stocks, Sprint Football, etc. I tried going to "Manage Applications" but no luck. Any help would be appreciated. Also, I'm not sure if it matters but my phone has been flashed to Boost mobile. Will that affect the rooting?

download titanium backup from the market. that app should allow you to remove the stock apps.

I'd suggest a freezer app (Bloat Freezer, 99 cents) which will remove the app from the drawer and disable it from working. The benefit is that if Sprint sends out an OTA update simply unfreeze them and you won't have any issues.

I bought my phone used with z4root & root explorer already installed, but I don't know how to use them. I can't seem to navigate my way through root explorer to find these annoying stock apps :/

also, is it normal then when i temporarily rooted my phone through z4root, it slowed down significantly?

well this probably means that z4 is not working. it can be buggy. for many people, it works when they first get the phone but after the first reboot it doesn't work anymore. so your problem might be that you don't have root access right now. other wise, z4 shouldn't be making your phone slow. that is usually a sign that it is not working.

I didn't realize Z4Root was working on the Shift at all. Thanks for the update. Has anyone been able to use it to one click permanent root? Or is there anything else as simple as Z4Root (one-click) to permanently root the shift? All I have found so far is too scary for me, even though I did manage to permanently root my Intercept.

I know that there are a few threads here with the same info, but I used this. It was super easy as long as you follow the instructions. I think it took about 10 minutes (not counting the downloads). LMK if you need some help, I'm no pro but I sure can get you there...

Did you flash your phone yourself? I'm trying to flash mine and have been researching it for about a week. I have all the software downloaded, and a donor phone.
