Root z981 for developement

hey, so i picked up a used zmax pro z981 and i love the concept of the built in hardware.

i noticed that the software is horrid, and updating to b20 yesterday made it worse so....

i have decided to buy a new one in a week or so, the metro 90 day rule, and use the current one as a development device, i would have a total of 4 devices i can test after initial dev.

i have found an article where they say kingo can root this device, i also found source code on zte's website, im not sure if this would help

i have experience with root, boot loaders and custom rom installs, this would be the first time i would try setting up a device from scratch, and could use some help with the process, possibly so far as donating the zmp to a good developer

Can we do anything with the source code for the zmp? It is the marshmallow kernel 3.18.x and is for the Metro PCS version.

Theoretically we could create a nougat build and test it virtually via pc, I just don't believe we could install a custom loader like twrp or the like without root, or that is what I was taught long ago.

If nothing else I want to use adb and get system ui tuner working, I would also love to fix some of the random bugs that people are reporting, although the zmp I currently use seems to be running pretty smooth and I have not noticed many issues, an audio screech developed yesterday after the b20 update, just like the axon mini I had for 24 hours before returning

Can be used virtually, but for production use on phones cannot since no way to update without signature from zte.

You sound cool. I gave up on rooting but the only reason I want this phone rooted is like what you said. Have nougat on this. And if you can really fix the bugs on this buggy phone with or without root, you will be the king on this thread. LOL.

Good luck though coz the locked bootloader and ZTE signature is a BIG hurdle for anyone trying to root this shitty phone. LOL.

Well I don't understand how in a post I read trying to get zte r&d to move, there were 12,000 people wanting the zmp updated or fixed, imo that would be enough for zte to be forced into at least fixing the problems that this phone is plagued with.

It was a $100 phone, that was $30 from Metro under a promotion. That was a year ago....

I was in the beta test program. All ZTE did with updates (B14-B20) was play with the kernel, cpu speed, charging speeds, and update security patches.
Once the Boost version cane out with Android 7 the beta program was closed.

ZTE has no further plans for any updates or fixes whatsoever for the Zmax Pro. End of story.

They didn't allow the bootloader to be unlocked cause they wanted people to buy their new device..

T-Mobile, not ZTE.
ZTE manufacturers the phones according to the contract with the carrier. They couldn't care, they've already been paid. (ex
: Verizon SGS 6 Edge+ vs other carriers. Verizon requested it remain locked)

Ok so I have from time to time been looking to see if there is a actual ROOT for the ZTE ZMax pro. I saw one very disturbing thread where they where some one said they had ROOT, then it was disputed and got it some personal attacks, threats, and me not knowing if ROOT has really been obtained. SO I ask simply, has ROOT been obtained and is there a thread somewhere explaining it with relevant downloads and instructions? A VERIFIED one as im not sure about what I saw on the other thread on this website. Thanks.

I have been more active on the discord app than i have been here, but i plan to post a couple of updated topics here on AF.

  1. Currently have a newer EDL tool that installs "TWRP" for you so you will never be able to brick the device.
  2. New updated RR & Lineage builds (PIE)
  3. TWRP updated to 3.3.1 latest
  4. Have a experimental treble pie build, but doubt i will release it as its super unstable.
Will all soon be posted and updated more often.
