Worried about security. Had something wierd happen

My Wife and I have had out Moto Droid's for a few months now.. Love the phones. We are both running 2.1 stock setup.

Here is the security concern.. last month my Gmail password got hacked, I have had that password for a LONG time and it had letters and numbers in it. And was not something easily guessed at.
Gmail sent me a message after lots of spam went out to my ENTIRE contacts list.. saying they suspected a security breach, due to an IP address in China accessing my account... I changed my password.

Yesterday my Wife's Gmail got hacked too... same thing. Spam to her entire address book, but nothing outright malicious.. just a link for people to follow to buy stuff. The link even seems legit.

I have changed both hers and mine again.. to rather long and complicated passwords with alfa and numerical digits.


I HAVE TO WONDER.. if the passwords were breached thru the Droid... it just seems very strange to me that we both get hacked in such a short time after we get the phones. Both our passwords had alfa numerical digits, and were not easily guessed at.

Anybody else have this happen??? is there a security option I may have misssed, or accidentally changed in the phone to open myself up to the breach.

Exact same thing happened to me last fall (before I got my droid, or had a smartphone at all). Only difference is I caught it before Google and changed my password immediately. I don't think it has to do with your Droid, but I suppose it's possible...

My fiance's FB and Yahoo accounts both got hit by a site hawking World Cup merchandise a couple of weeks ago. These things happen (isn't it sad we're so unsurprised by it these days?). I'd check your primary computer for malware before I'd worry too much about the Droids.

I agree here. Also work computers if you EVER check your personal email from work.

The droid is still too small a platform to be a high profile target. Mac's are more common I think, and yet most virii are still written for M$winders.

Its probably a rootkit or other malware on a pc. The fact that both your and your wifes passwords were jacked points to this as the culprit, especially if you login from the same machine

I think you guys are right.. I and my wife use a common laptop that is actually hers.. and she is not tech savvy at all.. She may have clicked on something somewhere to allow the intrusion. I am gonna have to check her machine carefully... mabye buy the full version of AVG..

Not sure this is true but I heard that if you download certain keyboards, the devs can track what you input for username and passsword for anything using their keyboard.

Only keyboard I tried was Swype.. for a short time and my wife never tried it... good info though.

I would think that Google would check the apps that are sold or transmitted thru the market. Also the devs out there would defintly have caught it. Unless your saying they are all in on it then anyone running a custom is screwed.

Nope, Google's policy is that they don't even look at apps and just let them get released, and then users report malicious or spammy apps. That's also why we get apps that the iPhone doesn't, because we don't have a greedy corporation rejecting apps they don't like.

But to the OP, another potential source of your account being cracked: Most people use one password for everything. If you do (and I would recommend against stating whether you do or don't), someone could set up a website asking you for your e-mail address and to create an account with a password. They'll then try your e-mail address with that password. It works a lot of the time because nobody wants to remember a bunch of different passwords. I would recommend, at the very least, keeping a different password for your GMail account and other services that you KNOW are trustworthy (eBay, Verizon, etc.).

Malwarebytes anti-malware works good and its free. You can get it at download.com.

I don't know how you access the internet, but check your service provider. They may have free antivirus software. Comcast cable offers norton security suite free.
