Help visual voicemail

I'll be getting a Droid X on Thursday and will likely be setting up Google Voice instead of paying for Visual Voicemail. However, am I correct in assuming you have to give everyone your Google Voice number to call instead of your Verizon cell number to use Google Voicemail? Everybody calls your Google Voice number and then calls, voicemails, texts, etc all get forwarded to your phone, right?

That is correct, when they call gv number everything goes to your phone, as long as you didn't set to block that person.:D

Well, isn't it possible to set your google voice phone number to be the same as your VZ number? Or is that not true?

No. But you can forward your VM to google voice. so they call your VZW number and when it goes to voice mail it will go over to google voice VM. It isn't hard to setup and if you go on google voice go to Settings > Voice Settings and if you have a phone on the acct then you can click the link that says "Activate Google Voicemail on this phone" and it will show you what you need to dial to do the forwarding.

So you don't have to give out your GV number if you just want to use Visual Voice Mail. All you have to do is forward it and they can call your regular number and it will be handled by google once it goes to VM. :D

No you can use your vzw number. You just need to have them use your voice number for texts if you don't want to pay for text messages through verizon. Once you set it up in the google voice account the instructions to tell your phone to use google voicemail instead of standard is:

Dial: *71xxxxxxxxxx Deactivate *73 (where x's = areacode+number)

Ah, great, thanks! I just did this with my current iPhone 4 and it works great. I can have the voicemail notify me via text or e-mail, which is nice. I would assume it'll work even better on the Droid X when I get it.
