I need some quick clarification w GV

It shouldn't be that hard to find an answer. There are lots of misconceptions about GV. It simply allows you to use your Google Voice number as your one and only number, then you can have calls routed where you want. Any calls routed to your cell will use minutes just like any other call.

Some people have found ways to use GV to not use minutes but that was not it's original intention. It isn't VOIP either, think of it as your personal switchboard.

If Gizmo5 was still accepting new users then you could use it in conjunction with SIPDroid and GV to get free calls over data but currently Google is working on incorporating Gizmo% with GV so we might have free calls in the near future.

And to answer your question yes it WILL use your voice minutes. The only trick is if you have the friends & family thing then you can put your GV # as one of them and make sure everyone calls your GV #, then you would have unlimited minutes.

if you use gv to make phone calles then it will cost you minuts just like any other voice call, its not like voip.

but, google voice sms and voice mail is using your data connection, its free.

Ok you can save your minutes using google voice I been doing so first with the t mobile g1 with the myfavs plan and now I am with nationwide friends and family u just can't use the google voice app u hav to the google voice the old fashion way and hav a certain on with ur gv ok first of all u need to go to ur google voice account on the actual site either the mobile verison or on ur computer and go to settings then click on the general tab and from there scroll down to caller id this is were the magic happens it starts off with u change from display callers number to display my google voice. Now we u get a call u won't kno who it is on ur phone screen but it screens ur calls and tells u over the audio recording now next step since ur with verizon is to put ur google voice numbe on ur family and friends one of the 5 slots u got and to call and not use ur minutes u can not use the app u hav to manuall call ur gv number and then listen to the recording put ur password and then press 2 to dail the number u want to cal and ta da it is all free

if you use your google-assigned voice number, it basically just forwards your calls from that number to your verizon number. you are not bypassing verizon at all. so yeah, it still uses your minutes.

Only true if u don't goin to ur gerenal settings and change it to show ur google voice number that's the key is for the google voice number to show up on the call logs not other poeples number and to do that u must hav changed that setting

ok i did not understand any of that. but i'm almost positive that regardless of any settings, your calls are still using verizon's network, and therefore you are still using your plan (unless you use some sort of voip). someone correct me if i'm wrong.

I'm sorry about the grammer. Just as long u got the idea

1 plan needs to hav my favs or family and friends depending which network ur on

2 google voice settings needs to b changed from caller id shows ur cell

3 put ur gv number in ur myfav or friends n family

4 do not use google voice to make calls with ur gv number.
Call ur gv number put ur password
Press 2 to dail out

5 it works as long as ur settings are switched show callers phone number to showid as ur gv number

6 don't believe test it out look at ur call logs and ur usage details it will not show up

Remember the requirements
plan must hav the myfav plan or friends and family plan
Settings in the google voice website much be changed
And three
Make sure u do not use the gv android app

Update: wen u look @ ur call logs should hav ur gv number wen ur tryin to save minutes if u did the settings correct and it show that it will b part of ur friends & family so its covered

Ok one don't use he gv app to make calls so hav the setting on international only or off if that helps

call ur google voice number normally like u would call ne other number

then follow the directions press 2 and viola ur phone will not be on ur usage because its under the gv number not the person ur callin

Data why would it matter u hav an unlimited data package either way no its voice.

I think the above posts are correct in saying that GV is free only if you designate your GV phone number as one of your five Verizon Family and Friends numbers, as I have. Thus, you need a 900 minute or higher plan. Were it not for that, I would have dropped my basic plan down to a lower minute limit.

Ok go into the mobile verison or the destop verison of google voice
Click settings
Click general
Scroll all the way down to caller id
Switch the settings from "Display caller's number" to "Display my Google Voice number"
Setting must b on "Display my Google Voice number"

This is important when recieving calls from ur gv number

Call ur gv number regularlly as if its ne other number u would call not using the gv app
Press 2
And dail out
Look at ur minutes usage and it should not add to ur minutes
