Making quick calls from the road

I know, I know, don't use your phone and drive, but you know, some times you have to.

I find the droid kinda tricky to power on, unlock, then call a certain contact. There are way too many screens to go through, even with contact shortcuts right on my home desktop.

What are your tips and tricks for making this process easier? I like the "voice dial" app and I wish I could tie that to one of the hard buttons on the side of the device. is this possible?

I wish the "call bob on mobile" actually called instead of bringing up a list.

You already mentioned my preferred method until the voice dialer is fixed. I just create a folder for direct dials and create shortcuts to direct dials.
Until things get upgraded, or an app comes out, there doesn't seem to be any real short way to make a call (that I have found yet)

Thanks for the long-press. That's handy.

Have you tried saying "Call Bob Mobile?" Or "Call Shannon at home"? -- Being more specific might activate the voice dial. haven't tried it personally, though.

My friend had to return his first droid because the voice dial through the voice search was not working. Whenever you tried to 'call' or 'dial' someone through voice search, it would just run a google search. Motorola said this was a software problem, but it was cause to get it exchanged. He got a new one, and it works perfectly now.

i have successfully said "Call XXXX mobile" and it calls the person. If the person has more than one mobile number, then it brings up a list for me to choose from.

I can't get that to work for me. even if the person only has one home or one cell phone number it still brings up a list of that persons home, mobile, work (it does get the person correct).

EDIT: got this to work using the long press on the search shortcut, then saying "call xyz mobile" as long as xyz only has one mobile/home/work phone it works... yeah.
