I've had my legend for about 3 months now I think and I've been reasonably happy with the web browsing, the accurate screen and keyboard, the camera, compass etc but where the phone seems to fail massively is in being a phone - like making calls and sending texts:

The reception is appalling at all times - choppy, low quality voice.

It often takes 2 or 3 attempts to make a call - I dial, hit call, it looks like it's trying to do something then the 'end call' button greys out, I think I hear 3 beeps (call tones, not from the handset as such) and it goes back to the home screen. It usually works second or third time.

1 in 3 of the texts I send comes up with a red cross saying 'message cannot be sent (or something similar) but then either it clears after a minute or so and the message is sent, or it doesn't and I have to resend. Sometimes recipients get the message twice.

I don't know if the problem has worsened over time or if I'm just now past the honeymoon phase and the fa

There is a known issue with the legend reception problem, go onto the vodafone eforum & there are about 17 pages of people with reception problems.
I believe vodafone will try to repair your phone 3 times bfore they give you a new one, but most people are saying the repair does not work & that it is a sotware issue.
Maybe worth speaking to them about it though.

I think it might be your service provider. I use to use a Sony Ericsson G600 and it had horrible signal where I lived despite O2 having supposedly good signal there. It was checked and turns out it was fine but once I switched to the Legend, my reception actually improved. I would check with Vodafone about it.

I've been with Vodafone in Brighton for 4 years on my n95 and n97 with no problems at all. Since switching to the Legend reception has been abysmal - literally every 1 in 3 texts doesn't send and regularly for no reason at all where I usually have signal suddenly it says I have none. But are there lots of other legend users with no reception issues whatsoever?! Is this a design flaw in the first batch only or what?

GeoffBot,

Did you ever figure it out? I have the same problem with my Bell Legend in use in the U.S., just as those on the vodafone forums have reported. It's said to be a problem with the radio auto-switching between 2g/3g bands. If I put my phone in 2g only it works perfectly fine.
I flashed to the 2.03 WWE ROM but it didn't repair it. Contacted HTC directly and they said to check for an update over the air to the software but the server is supposedly down right now. I'm hoping to find an answer or that 2.2 will fix this common issue because I don't want to be limited to 2g only.

@njhokie - Vodafone sent me a new/refurbished handset which just plain didn't work at all (the touchscreen was broken). So I sent it back and they sent me a new one which seems much better - only a few dropped calls and texts. Funnily though each swap they insisted I keep the original battery and cover, the latter forming part of the antennae I was potentially having problems with! Good luck mate.

Thanks, i probably won't have the option of trading in for a replacement as i bought mine unlocked from a 3rd party, not the carrier. should still be under HTC one year warranty however so we'll see what happens.
Its just odd it was working perfectly for a couple months then all of a sudden starting having these issues.
