Am I supposed to be able to play flash?

At first, I believe there was a question that would pop up asking me
whether I wanted to use youtube or not, but I mus have said don't
ask anymore, because I don't get that now (is there a way to get that
question back?). Now when I click on a flash file, I get a choice to
download or play. I click play, and the screen goes black.
There is some sort of spinning 'loading' graphic, then I get a popup that
says "Cannot play video Unable to connect to server".
This happens on any of the major video sites.

Thanks for any help.

Toby

Dolphin HD sends the video to the HTC Flash player or the YouTube app, and that might be more compatible than the native but limited flash support in the stock browser.

I tried downloading Dolphin HD, but I still get the same thing: black screen
with spinning 'loading' graphic, then "Cannont play video Unable to connect to
server".

Thanks,

Toby

What website is that? I'd like to test it out on my Evo.

Try m.espn.go.com, then look at "film icon" and click that... this is one that I have exact same problem... BUT it is intermentt (sp?)... I noticed when using wifi, it should guarantee saying can't connect to server... As if using signal with or without 3G, sometimes showed bad connect...

When I try to use Evo and my Ipod Touch using wifi and test everytimes... Ipod Touch showed video using quicktime everytime with no problem but Dolphins HD get errors and success maybe 1 or 2 times...

I have figure out since Tuesday that I got new... :(

That's because the Safari browser is grabbing the newer MPEG-type standard stream and downloading that rather than Flash - then handing it off to QuickTime.

Our stock browser is indeed AppleWebKit based - basically, very Safari-ish - but like other Android browsers at present it has no linkage to manage that MPEG-type stream (typically H.264 these days) and so instead, attempts service with a Flash-based stream.

The site itself - espn in this case - is stuttering on delivery of the flash content and the browser(s) in question are losing connectivity and therefore hanging.

You could assign blame in any number of different ways and be 100% right, so take your pick:

  • ESPN is not doing well supporting the legacy Flash stream along side the newer MPEG-type stream.
  • The Android browsers / Flash Lite package could be more adept at dealing with network stuttering by a content supplier.
  • The Android browsers should be supporting html5/MPEG~H.264 because flash video is going the way of the dodo bird.

Go here to see what your browser is capable of supporting - on any device or desktop:

The HTML5 test - How well does your browser support HTML5?

PS - Once the video begins to play - immediately hit menu, then re-play - that works wonders. (Still shows stuttering video tho - thank ESPN for that.)

m.espn.go.com is a mobile site that has no video. I went to the full espn site (which you can do in Dolphin) and clicked on one of the videos.

Then I had to move to a wifi connection.

I repeated the process and was able to play the videos inside of Dolphin browser (the browser did not hand it off to a standalone flv player like it does sometimes). Although it stuttered a bit at the start, it was smooth after it built up the buffer. I could not get it to go to full screen, but I did unpinch to make the video larger.

Yes and no, I think.

I went there in my stock browser, got no video.

I went to espn.go.com - just as you described.

I went to my browser settings, enabled Mobile view (it's usually off) and then went to espn.go.com - and that redirected me to a version of m.espn.go.com with video (top story) - and clicking on that launched the full-screen flash player stuff.

Initially voice and picture were beautifully out of sync. Tried Replay - no difference...

It just sux not getting MPEG-type video, but oh well.

EarlyMon: I checked by using your link (html5) and compared between HTC Evo and IPod Touch (should similiar with IP 3GS and 4):

For Video:

HTC Evo and IP showed element and poster image support as Yes but IP have capable of MPEG-4 and H.264 support.

I think that explain reason why my new HTC Evo struggle with that... However, I wonder if Skyfire might be capable like IP??

Will someone who have Skyfire test with this html5 link to what result for video??

Looks like they got it to run using android.webkit.permission.PLUGIN

I guess thats something of a hack, but if it works, thats great.

Yeah - I was just givin' ya a hard time, all in friendliness.

I was unsatisfied with it, so I uninstalled it and am going to wait for the real deal - unless I just throw up my arms and go early for 2.2 via root.

So far, it just offers a LITTLE more site access (for me personally) and doesn't really work 'cept in portrait mode.

If I can't get to Babylon 5 on slashcontrol.com - and I couldn't, even with this - then it's still a fail - but that's just me.

No freaking way - HOW?!?!?

Details, man, details!

I'd get the commercial and then the control bar - and then it would spin into infinity, never loading...

Like you said phone rooted running cyan mod 6 the nightly one with flash player 10.1 beta. Works like a charm and fullscreen when watching the show. If you want i'll make a quick video showing you how it looks. Works great also when going to sites like miniclip and you can play games on there.
