Root First time rooter - questions

1. Of the many, many ROMs out there, which one is best for stability and speed? I don't care about eye-candy but would just like to speed up my Eris.

2. Does rooting my phone require a full wipe and reinstall of everything?

3. Is it worth my time if I'm going to upgrade to the Droid X in September?

1. You are going to get a wide array of answers to this, ultimately it will be up to you to decide what's best for your phone since not all phones are equal.

2. Yes it will require a full wipe to install most roms, however there are tools that can be used like titanium backup or mybackup pro that can alleviate some of the pains of switching roms.

3. Once again, that's for you to decide. I can tell you that most people who are skeptical about rooting, after rooting they make statements of why didn't I root sooner.

If you decide to root I suggest that once you get the recovery system (which allows you to get rooted), instead of flashing a rom right away get engtools.zip (credit to jcase) and flash it. This will root your current setup without wiping and then you can use one of the apps I suggested to backup data and apps.

I've been running White Widow 4.6 since I rooted and I love it.

Used Evil Eris 3.0, now on Cyanogen Eris Lightning Bolt(aka CELB) 2.8. I like the non-sense features because it operates like my wife's motoDroid, except with cooler features (ie. full 360 rotating). I chose CELB over White Widow because I read White Widow had problems with their proximity sensor with the dialer (IOW: When you call and move the phone away from your ear, the screen doesn't come on, you'd have to hit vol-up or end, possibly ending your call).
Haven't tried Plain Jane yet, but heard good things about it reading here in the forums.

So, Eris Lightning Bolt 2.8 has 360 rotation? Does it have Wifi tethering?

And Plain Jane....does she wifi tether, and rotate as well??

Plain Jane will not rotate due to the fact that it's basically the stock rom with a different kernel and apps2sd installed. Wifi tether should work you just need to get the app from the market if it's not already installed.
