Dinc to X, my impressions.

Hello Friends,

I just received my X, after having a Dinc since launch. Just thought I would share my impressions since I know there are a lot of Dinc people on the fence.

First, I will say, that either way... you can't go wrong. Both are fantastic phones and for a while, I was torn. I still am torn, but one thing that is going to win the X for me, is the screen size and keyboard size.

When I first booted the phone, I thought "OH NO! This thing sucks! It is all laggy!" But, after the update and letting it sit to do all of its syncing and what not, the thing works fine. The "stuttering" or lag, I think, is over exaggerated by some. Yes, it isn't quite as smooth as the Dinc, but it isn't so bad that it is bothersome, to me anyway.

The next biggest thing I noticed was the colors. This is where the Dinch shines, as we are all aware. I just wanted to echo what others have reported, that the colors on the X are not as vibrant or deep as the Dinc, and may be a bit washed out. However, the screen is still fantastic and after a few hours of NOT looking at the Dinc, I have grown quite accustomed to it and it is just fine.

Thirdly, it seems to me that the X's speaker is quieter than the Dinc's. And I thought the Dinc's was quiet. So, this might be a small issue for me, but it isn't enough to kill the deal.

Call quality. It has been said before, and for me it is true, but the call quality on my X far exceeds my Dinc. I am not sure why, it is what it is.

Signal strength. I get full bars in my house on the X, with 2-3 on he Dinc, but when looking at actual strength in the status, they are both just about the same, with the X being slightly better.

Construction quality. To me, the X feels better built. The Dinc's plastic battery cover feels what it is, cheap, in comparison. Plus, my Dinc squeaks. To me, that is a sign of inferior construction. However, a little piece of paper under the battery cover solved that and it wasn't much of a bother.

Hard buttons vs touch buttons. The touch buttons are hands down, far better in my opinion. I hate the buttons on the X, but I am getting used to them now and soon won't be a bother. They take a considerable amount of force compared to my original droid, but again, I am getting used to it.

Finally, screen size. When I was comparing phones side by side, it was a toss up for me. Both are awesome pieces of tech, and their individual con's weren't enough to sway me one way or the other. But, that giant screen on the X won me over in the end. I don't have to zoom web pages on it and I have far fewer errors with the generously spaced keyboard on the X. Yes, sometimes I have to 2 hand things because of the size, but that isn't really a bother.

Anyway, hope that helps some others on the fence. I apologize for the length.

Justin

Justin,

Thank you for your impressions. I like both phones, having actually had more time with my DI than my DX. There are folks who would disagree with your analysis, but you did say that they were impressions. I don't think the DI feels cheap and the the screen of the DX is washed out. The truth is, according to professional analysis, that the DI's amoled screen color is over-saturated (fake).

I agree that the call quality on the DI isn't as good as the DX, but is it really thaaat much better? I don't know.

In any event, thank you for your post. :)

Ah yes, I do agree that the it may be the other way around, that the Dinc's colors are probably over saturated. That is probably why that now, the X looks normal and fine to me. :)

Also, at least on my phones, the call quality is noticeably better. Again though, that is just to me.

The "cheapness" feel to me mostly comes from my dinc being squeaky LOL so it is in my head that it is plastic and cheap LOL.

The first time I picked up the dinc I felt it was cheap feeling also; it really turned me off. My touch pro 2 has a better feel. I wish htc would have used the tp2 design and just added android 2.2, amoled captive display, 1ghz proc and more memory. The 4 hard keys are in the right spot and the zoom bar would have been a great alternative. I love that phone but I will never, never, never go back to wm 6.5.

The call quality is why Verizon is offering me an X (replacing my incredible). The update is supposed to fix this issue but they cant say when that will be.

Size will probably be why I stay with the Incredible. The X camera I am told is better and I am sure the X is a bit faster.

Anyway, thanks for this tthread, anyone else want to comment. It will make my decision easier/more informed.

Yea I agree with most of what you said. I love the physical buttons on the X though since I always used to hit the Dinc buttons by accident. One thing I find on the X is that sometimes the 3G doesn't work. For example, I was trying to match a song with Shazam and the 3G signal was stuck. Its done this numerous times but its not a huge deal.

The other thing is the screen. I first too thought it was washed out coming from the Dinc but now that Im used to it, it looks great.

yeah, mine never squeaked. the gradient cover did, not the phone.

i also went from the dinc to the x here's my impression

the x in my opnion is superior simply because of the features it boasts, i use every one of the :) the hdmi out is simply amazing as well as media sync. i love the incredible as well it was really hard for me to let it go lol but the x has grown on me.

the screen on the x is fantastic watching videos and browsing are really comparable to a pc. the incredible does a good job but after having the x i realized how cramped things tend to become on the ding. the colors feel more natural on thee x as where the incredible seems a lil cartoony.

what really made me switch to the x was the HD video recording. i race motocross and i love the fact that my phone takes better quality video than my digital camera.

my conclusion is that all in all i love verizon and i love android phones. they're fantastic devices both the incredible and the x. the x has a lil more features and obviously has bigger display.

thanks for allowing me to share my thoughts :) have a nice evening

I went from the Inc to the X, but most likely will be switching back. I just find everything harder to do on the X. The UI isn't as polished. For me, its' all about how easily the software and hardware blend together. And to me, the X doesn't do that very well. Hardware, people can say what they want and quote all the specs, but I find the Inc to be faster and smoother. The 4 physical buttons on the X seem like an afterthought.

Call quality and reception are equal in my opinion. Battery life seems slightly better on the X, though that's subjective to me. The screen on the Inc, even though smaller, is easier on my eyes. I find both screens equally difficult to see in the outdoor sun.

There's more, but I'm sure most people in this forum don't care.

That's it, flame away.....

I'm pretty happy I waited. My boss got the Incredible the day it was released after his blackberry died. He had the storm two for about a week which was just aweful and then the Incredible. I really do love that phone. It's a great size and the software is great. I went for the x for a lot of the same reasons- I liked the bigger screen, the buttons, the capabilities (which i have yet to even come close to pushing) and the software. I like the closer to naked android feel and while Sense is quite nice, I don't think it adds all that much.

I will say I think the camera on his phone is better but his phone also does suffer from a fair amount of lag- not quite sure whats going on with that. Either one is great and we both have times where we can honestly say "Bet you wish you had this phone instead :p"

Also- @theXfactor, not sure which forum you came from but you aren't putting anything that controversial out there so you don't have to worry about flaming lol

Umm I hope no one flames. This thread isn't meant to be an X > Dinc thread or anything like that. In fact, I said right off that folks can't go wrong either way. I just felt like sharing my experience and others have jumped in. I hope we are above flaming someone who decided the Dinc was for them. It is an excellent choice.

i agree, i spent a day with the X last week for work and now they are replacing all our old windows mobile 6.1 omnia's with the X. so my X is now on order and should be here in a week or so. My personal phone is an incredible so i will be carrying both on a daily basis. in my one day with the X though (and having an incredible) i agree with what most people say. i did also notice that the Incredible does seem smoother, i really thought maybe it was moto blur widgets and noticed the X was smoother once i removed the moto widgets and used android ones but it still wasn't as "smooth" feeling as the incredible was packed with widgets. if i didnt' have an incredible i honestly would not have noticed on the X so that isn't any kind of annoyance or deal breaker. What i really liked about the X was of coarse the screen size and it really really felt solid in the construction department, i thought i would be bothered by the camera "bump" but i found it perfect as my finger naturally goes right below it and holds up the phone. Everyone at work was giddy over the X and the screen until i put my incredible next to it (the incredible looked small next to the X) and turned on the screen. the X looks very washed out color wise next to the Dinc, if you use just the X you don't notice and screen looks great but if you have an AMOLED screen near by you notice the difference in LCD (i also have a zune HD which is AMOLED and it had the same effect although the zune looked like a keychain in size sitting next to the X).
i thought call quality and signal strengh were about the same although the Dinc displays less bars the actual signal strengh was nearly identical. the UI on the X does kinda suck if you have used Sense UI on the HTC phones though, just lacks that polish and ease of use feel. a quick launcher pro download should fix that on the X though.

all that is nit picky stuff both phones are awsome and if you can deal with the physical size of the X you really can't go wrong with either. i would be really happy with either phone so i am really lucky i will get to have both.

I hope not either. Really, ppl that had the Inc and EVO and switched or stayed with their current phones, posting the why of their decision is good for ppl trying to decide which to get. Its kinda different with the EVO since its on another carrier.

As long as it seems like constructive criticism and not biased....lol Like your first post, thats was a good post.

I loved my Incredible, and I love the X. Both are great phones. That said, I agree that call quality is better on the X. I actually dropped calls with the Incredible - something I've never done with any Verizon phone before. I consistently get better coverage with the X. The reason I won't go back to the Incredible, even though I loved the phone and it fit so much better in my hand and pocket? It's too small to type on now that I've used a 4.3inch phone.

One further thought - when the Droid originally came out, Motorola got a lot of crap about making the home, search, back, and menu buttons capacitive. People wanted hardware buttons. I prefer the hardware buttons personally, but I'm sure there's a lot of people on both sides of that argument.

Thanks for the thread - lots of people are considering switching, I'm sure this helps to make the decision!

I've been with my X now since the day it was launched. My Dinc went to my wife and is obviously still in the household. I to struggled with the washout of the screen, or at least the perceived washout. I also loved the Sense UI that the Dinc sports and do miss some things about it. Now that I've had my X for 3 weeks or so, I find that the colors and brightness of the screen are great. It doesn't looked washed out, but then I'm not comparing while it's sitting next to the Dinc. Camera, I'm thinking that it's a wash... both seem to be good, but I think that the Video on the X is better. I know, I know... the specs say that I'm only seeing the better numbers. I actually think the video recorder works better. Easier to use and seems to have less visual issues. I also agree thinking that the external speaker on the X is way to quiet. Ring Tones are clear as a bell but not loud enough. It hasn't been a huge issue, but I would really like it to be louder. It has to be a software issue, so I'm hoping that it changes with updates. Concerning call quality, I've spent a ton of time on the phone using it as a phone. Both the Dinc and the X are quality phones, but the X, in my opion is far superior. The calls are incredibly clear and full. The Dinc just isn't as....well, it's just not at the same level.

Speed of the phones are similar when you are not scrolling and moving through the system itself. For example, when I pull up something on YOUTUBE, the X is amazingly fast. In my opinion, faster than the Dinc. The internet is also as fast or faster on the X. But the thing that sucks is that the X doesn't manipulate the page to that you can see all the text in a modified view. Less scrolling and side-to-side movement while browsing was a nice feature on the Dinc's Sense UI. When you are moving through the system the X is slower and clunkier. My guess is that the operating system that lays over the Android system just isn't as polished. Again, this has to be software related and I hope it's corrected.

Definitely not a bash thread, and thanks for that.... everyone. Both are great phones and even today, I am considering going back. But, to be honest every time I look at that huge screen and watch video or surf, I have a real hard time ordering another Dinc.

Helps if your 6'10" and your hands can handle the phone easily. Luck me!

Both devices have their strengths:

Better on X (IMO)

1. Build
2. Display is better for video and games
3. Call quality
4. More codec support

Better on Inc (IMO)

1. Wifi strength
2. Sound quality and volume from speaker and especially the 3.5 jack (X is weak like Droid)
3. Hot swap for microsd

Same (IMO)

1. Signal strength is same dBm level, in spite of what the bars say (Inc bars are on drugs)
2. Speed with apps & games. Added: Except PC and straight iPhone app ports. GPU is better on X. Same as my N900.

All in all it is a wash. If you are a video freak- X wins, and if you are an audio freak, the Inc wins.

mcl331,

Dolphin HD should fix the fit to screen issue for web.

Well I've had the X less than 24 hours. Had the Inc since launch. Main reasons for trying the X (bought it at Walmart) are for the biggerscreen (I have big hands) and for the supposed more powerful GPU. So far, don't notice any speed improvements over the Inc gaming wise. The bigger screen is nice, but the amoled with it's rich colors is excellent save for in sunlight. I do like the brighter whites with the X though.

I prefer the Inc's capacitive bottons over the X's hard buttons so far. I miss the optical trackball a bit. I miss the easy copy/paste that sense ui offered. I also think the browser was nicer on the inc - especially with how it did the automatic reformatting of text to fit page when pinch zooming in or out.

The Inc definitely has better speaker volume and overall fidelity with MP3's with speaker or headphones. I'm hoping froyo will fix this problem in the X.

Without a case, the X feels a bit more well built, but I use a silicon case for the Inc and with that it feels just as good as the X. If I keep the X I will likely get the Verizon case that has the kickstand built in, something no one makes for the Inc.

Finally, Sense UI blows blur out of the water. Plain and simple, the Inc is faster at almost everything because of sense. I've already DL'd and tried ADW and Launcherpro over Blur, but from my experience they still aren't as good as sense. Battery life on both phones seems to suck. I usually get a full day out of my Inc. So far, the X is blowing through the battery. Granted, I have the LCD turned to full, and am playin with it constantly, but I am so far NOT impressed with the battery in the phone. I'm sure it will improve some, but I don't think battery life will be a determining factor in which phone I stick with.

So for me the phones are pretty equal so far. I prefer the Inc for the deep colors of the amoled and for Sense UI. I prefer the X for the bigger screen and for the brightness of the screen. I think it's gonna be a tough decision on which phone I stick with. I have 14 days to decide before I have to return the X to Walmart if I am not going to keep it. The X is activated on my number so I will be using it during that time. We will see which one comes out on top. Too early to tell.

Thanks for the input Tee, I am/was pretty much in the same boat. After a couple days now, the hard buttons are growing on me and I am liking the phone much better with launcherpro. I too am praying froyo or the next update can improve the speaker, but I don't know if that is even possible. I miss most notifications/calls when doing anything that makes noise like listening to the radio or watching TV, especially if the phone is in my pocket. I guess that is what they make vibrate for LOL.

I am keeping the X, because the screen size just wins over the negatives for me. Plus, I just shipped the Dinc out from and ebay sale so I am all in now. LOL

Justin - no problem, and good thread!

I'll update more as I get more acclimated to the X. But to be honest, the damn thing is giving me fits right now. Locking up constantly and even the browser crashes before I can get to my bookmarks. I've loaded up a bunch of my apps that I had on the Inc so I'm wondering if one of those doesn't play nice with the X. I may just try to do a hard reset (or factory reset) of the X soon and start from scratch if I can't get the bugs fixed. The bigger screen is really growing on me tho.

As formerly a home theater designer I grew to love the beauty of a nice screen especially a calibrated plasma display. Plasma however is out sold dramatically by LCD despite the greater amount of flaws compared to plasma. Why, it's the oversaturated screen that sells better. people like the thrill of being punched in the eyeballs with color, I mean people look almost orange on the inc, another issue is the screen door effect the graphics have on the inc compared to both droids....other than that it's an awesome phone that inc, and I'd be happy with either one......now Blur has been toned down alot from the devour tons better and even has some things it does better than Sense like the way it handles widgets. In a way you could say new blur has as many widgets as sense because sense would do the same widget several times for different sizes whereas they're resize-able in blur.....what Sense does as good as apple is the sexy well polished appearance of its UI
