GPS signel - takes more than a minute to get a lock

Regular GPS would take a while, especially when in the city where there are buildings around which bounces signal around. Have you got 3G turned on? Turning it on will allow A-GPS, which is a lot quicker, but would use a small amount of data usage (~200-300KB).

On my Desire, disabling 3G takes over a minute to get a GPS lock in, turn it on, and I get a lock in by the time I finish typing in my destination address.

Some car manufacturers use athermic heat-reflecting windscreens that reflect all electromagnetic signals, including GPS's, blocking the signal from entering the car. Reported car models using such heat reflecting windscreens include:

Audi - all models from 2001 onwards
BMW - 7 Series models E38, E65/66
Citroen - Xsara Picasso
Jaguar - X-Type
Peugeot - “07” range
Renault - all models from 2001 onwards and Laguna
Vauxhall - all models from 2002 onwards and Zafira
VW Passat - all models from 2002 onwards.

+1

I can confirm the Peugeot 307 has this kind of screen, and can also confirm the Desire gets a quicker fix and more reliable signal than my dedicated TomTom 920 so another plus for the Desire GPS
