OK so I have an unbranded HTC Desire on O2 from the Carphone Warehouse.

Went to root the other day... checked my hboot and it was 0.83.

All the guides I'd read don't offer a solution for 0.83. I read more into it and if I followed one of those guides I would kill my screen. (0.83s are running SLCD screens where as the other hboots are OMOLED I believe? Correct me if I'm wrong).

So after a bit of searching I found this guide: Welcome to Cell Academy

But before I jump in and follow it, I want to see if anyone else has rooted their 0.83 and how they did it or what guide they followed? Please provide your phone information when posting also. :)

I don't fancy killing the screen anytime soon.

Hi i'm a complete noob at this phone rooting thing but I Have a 0.83 hboot and tried rooting mine. As far as I can tell through trying different things and reading lots of forums is that yes you can root but you will not be able to change your rom. It therefore seems pretty pointless to me and i'm now trying to find a way of unrooting my phone. 2.2 rolling out from tomorrow anyway.

Well, sorry but straight after makin this thread I found what I was looking for on the xda forums. I'm using my phone at the moment but I will post the link tomorrow. I look forward to rooting this phone and will hopefully film the method and progress.

Good on your for videoing it and sharing.

I have done it. Very easy with unrevoked. Ran a rom from a zip in recovery. Tried a few of roms, Cyanmod, DJdroid etc. I thought the jerky 720p recording was commonplace for all custom roms so unrooted to brandless froyo 2.2, the jerking is still there so may revert back to rooted. One big benefit of this is the lack of adware. God I hate that sh*t. :D

Followed Lekky's guide last night. Was pretty painless, apart from I had to install the USB Hboot driver for a second time (?) when I was half way through rooting my phone. Worked fine though, and i'm now researching all the ROM's I can find to pick one that suits me.

Rooted because I got fed up with O2's delays, and was surprised to find GERMAN sat-nav on my UK handset.

Just tried to root my phone there...

How do I uninstall HTC Sync but keep the driver?

Whenever I got to step J / K on lekkys guide unrevoked went "pushing (something, im assuming it was the custom img)" then hung and said waiting for bootloader?

Since I have followed every other step throughout the guide I am assuming the HTC driver uninstalled when I uninstalled HTC Sync..

My phone was on the HBOOT menu so I waited a while to see if anything happened then I went to reboot and disconnected the USB.

Anybody help me out on what to do here?
