Anyone know of a good RSS app with a widget (that allows you to specify your own feeds) that has the option to take up the entire screen, not just a single line? To be clear, I want an app with widget that can display on a screen, not an app that you have to browse to, then open, and then view a list of feeds.

What I'm looking for is something like the native News app but something that actually works! I've tried to use that app before but it refuses to update properly even when I try to do a manual update.

Any suggestions folks? Either on a new app, or on how to make the native News app work properly...?

Thanks in advance!

Well you probably already know this, but the default News widget is full screen but has it's limitations. For my uses, I like it quite a lot. Add a bunch of RSS feeds, but when you add the widget, it will only look at one of your feeds. If you tap the top of the widget, it will ask you which feed to look at, but the one on the widget is always the one you picked when you added the widget. I believe "All feeds" is an option you can use for the main widget feed.

SparseRSS is the one I use, it allows multiple feeds, each with there own refresh time, and it has a widget which links to the article, but it only takes up half sceen as a widget but does show the newest 7 items of news, and the unread ones are in brighter, so you can see. It also has notifications so when new RSS comes, you get a notice on the notification bar and you can set it to make a noise or vibrate.

Hey folks, thanks for all the replies!

@beady_uk - I've been trying out RSS Widget Boards, and that works quite nicely, I also like the different colours. Do you know on average how often it updates? Is it every 4 hrs or something? I've been trying to monitor it but haven't been able to track that down!

@ReasonableMan - I like the layout and scroll feature of the default News widget as well. My problem is that it does not update properly. Even when I press the update button at the bottom, it fails. Does the updating work perfectly for you?

@justinbrett1975 - SparseRSS is actually proving quite nice. I have however noticed one shortcoming. Once I plug my phone into my pc via usb (and usually I set it to become a disk drive), the widget becomes blank and all you see is the black background. I'm guessing this is because SparseRSS pulls data from memory card so once that becomes inactive, so does SparseRSS ! (Just like you can't access photos from your phone once you have the phone connected as a disk drive to your PC.)
Does the same thing happen to you?

I found NewsRoom to be effective!

You can specify the RSS feeds you want in a row of 4 homescreens.
It has some nice features in it.

Although you can't put a widget an the homescreen you can put a icon on your homescreen which opens the RSS Feed you've selected.

So for example, if you've got 4 RSS feeds you can put them on your homescreen as a single icon. When opened you see all the news feeds from that RSS feed.

It's defenitly worth a try!

I am unsure of the update rate but i dont think it is as long as 4 hours. i think maybe 1 hour - never really checked

@beady_uk - another quick question.. regarding RSS Widget Boards, does the Update button on the right side of the widget work for you? I've tried pressing it, but the feed display does not seem as if it updates.

Yeah the update button does work for me. If you can see it when you press (i know it will be under your finger when you press it) it flashes white. If you wait a few seconds it will display new info- if there is any to display. I have my feed on the BBC NEWS UK RSS feed and there is usually something new to show. I did not use the BBC feed that was already in the app, i tracked down the direct UK news feed from the bbc website and used that.

Hope this helps
