Help Can I downgrade from 2.2 to 2.1.1?

I have a Motorola Droid 2 on Verizon. It is not rooted, just a basic phone with a few apps. I'm currently running Froyo 2.2 and I would like to get back to 2.1.1, or frankly any version other than 2.2.

I got my phone last year in November and it was running version 2.0. Since then I have upgraded to 2.1 and 2.1.1. Around a month ago, the 2.2 update was pushed to my phone, and after reading great reviews about it, I was excited to upgrade. I allowed the update to my phone and since then I have experienced constant problems with it. Another "update" was pushed to my phone a week or so ago, but I checked the version after the update and it was still 2.2, so I'm not sure if it actually did anything, and I still have the same problems.

Since updating, my web browser freezes up regularly making it unable to use. Some of the applications I use frequently crash or freeze up (such as Pandora). The phone is much less responsive; I sometimes have to just put it down and wait for it to start responding to input again. When I try to select a text message to read, most of the time it enters a different thread than the one I selected. I'll then have to back out and try to select the text message I want to read again, and it always works the second time. The phone often misses calls; it doesn't ring or anything. I'll just get a voicemail, which is the only way I know I missed the call; no other notification or anything. It no longer plays WAV files. About half the time I try to load a YouTube video, or even launch the YouTube application, I receive a message that there is no internet connection, even though I'm using the web browser and I know I have an internet connection. Before upgrading, I almost never rebooted my phone, but now I have to rebooted multiple times a week because of the freezing and crashing of apps.

Basically it has went from a smartphone, to just a phone. I am so frustrated. If I can't downgrade, I think I'm just going to have to get a different phone.

I have found posts on how to downgrade other phones from 2.2 to 2.1, but I'm not sure if they work on the Motorola Droid 2, and I don't want to risk being completely without a phone, since I use it for work and personal use. The other guides I have found for the downgrade seem to specify they are for phones other than the Motorola Droid 2.

Droid 2 just came out. Droid 1 came out last november.

If you have a Droid, yes you can downgrade ... however i would recomend just restoring your phone as 2.2 on the Droid ran great on my old Droid 1.

If you have a Droid 2 .. then no, no version outside of 2.2 has ever been available publicly for the phone.

There does seem to be some confusion, the Droid 2 has been available for less than a month and has always run Android 2.2 (2.2.20 seems to be the current version for unrooted phones). I'd guess that they actually have the original Droid and not a Droid 2.

My apologies. I remember the marketing when I got it that they were saying it was a Droid 2 because it was running Android 2.x, however it may be a Droid 1. I thought I was giving the correct information.

So you have a Droid 1 purchased last November, are running Android 2.2 and want to go back to Android 2.1.1 or similar.

By the way - you're in the wrong forum - this is the Droid 2 forum.

That said, you can't go back to an older version of the Android OS unless you root your phone. If you want to learn about that, go back to the Droid 1 forum and look in the All Things Root section on how to root and load ROMs. That may be beyond what you're willing to do, understandably.

Couple of things you should try first:

- Factory reset - under Settings>Privacy. This will remove any apps you have installed from the market and any personal data (like SMS/MMS, call logs, bookmarks, etc.) from your phone (this will NOT affect any data on your SD card). If you want to back any of that up, MyBackupPro is a very good option. Do that, when you reboot after the factory reset most or all of your apps should be automatically reinstalled.

- Back up your SD card contents to your PC and then format your card in the Droid and copy your files back - SD card issues can cause significant issues in some cases

Worst case, if none of that works call Verizon...they have to make your phone work right or replace it, you're still under warranty until November.

so does factory reset = 2.1 (or whatever android OS came on your phone when you bought it)?

Factory reset has no affect on your Android OS...whatever you have installed when you run it stays the same. If you have Android 2.2.2.0 and do a reset, you'll still have 2.2.2.0.

Factory reset only removes any programs you have installed and your personal data (SMS, MMS, Call Log, etc.).

Your files on the SD card are not affected.
