Root Droid X waiting at home, what should I do first?

Soo I just got a Droid X and I want to load up Froyo. I downloaded the update.zip from here "intomobile.com/2010/08/22/leaked-droid-x-android-2-2-rom-prompts-a-cease-desist-from-motorola/".

I am a developer so I am not so worried about the technical stuff, but I want to do this safely so I have come to the experts.

Here are my questions / concerns that hopefully someone can alleviate for me.

1) What steps should I take first in going to 2.2?
2) Should I root my phone before running this update?
3) Will I be able to get the OTA update if I do this? unkown?
4) What can go wrong?
5) If something does go wrong how hard is it to restore to 2.1 and what would give me a chance of bricking my phone.


I have moded a wii and my old bb storm so I am vaguely familiar with some of these methods, just want to do things properly. Thank you to anyone that can respond to any of these.

Easiest way

1.root with universal androot here. Install it as an apk then open it up and press root
2. get droid x bootstrap from here and install it then open it up and press botstrap recovery
3. Get rom manager from the market, open it up and press flash clockwork at the top
4. select download rom and choose stock images and then 2.2
5. let it download the let it install

Could I do this once 2.2 and install the 2.1 stock if I wanted?

The only way to get back to 2.1 from 2.2 is to flash the SBF with RSDLite.

Only way to go back to 2.1 is to flash the sbf.

And to your other question, if you upgrade to the leaked 2.2, you won't be able to get the VZW OTA (they've already stated as much). You could flash back to the sbf and then get it, but why would you want to? Whatever changes are in the final OTA will show up in a custom ROM sooner or later anyway.

I may be wrong but I 'think' this is the part where you need to hit the right-most "Magnifying Glass" button on the phone.

ROM manager doesn't book into recovery? Make sure you have the most current version of Busybox. And did you make sure to open DroidX bootstrap recovery first and hit the top button. wait til it says success. --> Open rom manager. --> hit flash clockworkmod. success. then what did you do.

Apologies immediately after I noticed I was told to do a boot strap reboot. Which then allowed me to correctly update. However do I still have su? I saw that someone said I had to move it before updating.

You should still have root. First off, Universal Androot does the move automatically now (puts su in xbin from the start), and second of all, if you updated to 2.2 off Clockwork Mod, it's already rooted. You should be all set, but it's pretty easy to check. Just try a program that needs root
