Root New to rooting, have a few questions

So I have had my Evo for a little over a month now. I love it, but rooting seems to offer a lot of things to enhance the phone. Now I'm pretty computer savvy, say for overclocking and reformatting and such, but I'm clueless when it comes to these phones. I will be following this guide, is this everything I need to know?

Seems pretty straight forward but I have no clue what ROM to get and I'm not even sure what a kernel is. There are so many ROMs out there I kinda got overwhelmed. Maybe some of you could recommend me one? I want to keep 2.2, and I also NEED 4G to work as Raleigh is one of the cities blessed with 4G coverage. I'm pretty happy with HTC Sense interface, but I'm open to other suggestions. Other than that I just want better battery life, stable performance, unlocking the 30fps cap, CPU speed scaling, and free tethering would be nice.

Like I said I don't really know what a kernel is or does. Will I have to flash a new kernel as well as a ROM? And when am I supposed to/how do I flash the radios?

There are a few different ways to root. The Unrevoked 3.21 is really no hassle at all and works for noobs as well as techies alike. The thread you posted is from July and might be outdated.
The ROM in my sig is a rooted stock Froyo one with sense (touch screen). Search for that and load it up.
notice how slow the screen moves from side to side when moving between screens? Then flash to a Kernel (i.e. like the one named in my sig, toastmod) and then notice how fast and smooth the screens slide now.
I have no idea what exactly the kernel does but it fixed the 30fps cap and that's all I cared about.

Wimax and radio flash are required, too. I don't know where they are posted but do a search over at XDA. You flash all these the same way. Put the zip on the SD card, boot to the recovery screen and load them up.

1. The only roms with 4g working are the sense based roms. The difference between most sense based roms is the sprint bloatware removed. My personal favorite is fresh 3.2 in my signature. To flash this rom once rooted, download it, put it in the root of your sdcard, boot into recovery, i recommend using quickboot, in the app market, since it takes you there. Wipe data, cache and dalvik-cache and install zip from sdcard. All of these are pretty simple to find in clockwork and ra recovery. Rom manager if you get it from the app market will flash clockwork for you and will also give you the option to flash ra recovery too.

Fresh comes with a good stock kernel, and the kernel i use is also in my signature, but recommend not flashing kernels until you get comfortable with what you have.

Also make sure you back up your data, contacts and such since you will lose these when you wipe data. I used titanium backup to save my apps and settings, but when you restore the settings from one rom to another you will have issues. I now use app saver from the app market to save my applications. It has a great interface and will save the .apk of all your apps so you can install them from a list and dont have to worry about downloading them one by one. That should get you started.
