Gesture shortcuts?

Could it be at all possible to code an app for the G1 that would allow you to say, slightly jerk the phone to the left or right, and that gesture would act as a phone shortcut? Since the phone is equipped with an accelerometer, it seems like it could be possible to have it behave a certain way, depending on certain movements.

So say I wanted to start writing a SMS message. Without even having to touch the screen, or any of the buttons, I simply just jerk the phone slightly to the right (or any sort of gesture), and then up comes the compose SMS message menu.

Is it possible?

That app of course would have to be running in the background ... The answer is yes ... someone wrote an app (Ring Control) that would change the way the phone would respond based on its physical position Like Face Up: Ring -- Face Down: Silent -- Upside Down: Vibrate ...

How about using the lock screen engine, to build an app? Similar idea a bit more control....

I could write a big "S" for SMS or a big "W" for a web browser or maybe, it could even be more like handwriting recognition/palm/jot where the symbols do a macro of actions.

"S1" - SMS Friend1 and say "on my way"
"W2" - Bring up the weather for my second location.
"C1" - Call Home
