Root Failed attempt to root for first time with Unrevoked 3 after accepting 9/22 OTA

I did some research rooting online, and watched the tutorial on droid demos, it was simple for him, so I thought I'd give it a try. Here's exactly what happened...

Cliffnotes: I tried to root exactly as the video showed, it failed, and I don't know if I somehow screwed up this seemingly simple process, or if the latest OTA has killed my rooting ability?

More details:

1. Never rooted before at all

2. Accepted the latest OTA to get the unlocked fps

3. Running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, downloaded Unrevoked 3. Made sure the phone was in charging only, with debugging enabled.

4. Ran Unrevoked 3

5. Unrevoked 3 rebooted my phone as expected, once in the bootloader, I selected Hboot USB as told...after a little bit of time, my phone rebooted, and then went back to the bootloader... and did nothing. i tried selecting Hboot USB again, and it would give me some errors about PC36IMG and then refresh back to the original menu, where I would again select Hboot USB, and it would do the same loop over. I did notice S was still on, and the other numbers displayed at the top didn't look anything like those seen on images of rooted phones I have seen.

6. Finally, I decided I was screwed, and selected recovery. My phone promptly gave me the black screen with the red phone, triangle, and exclamation point.

7. I pulled the battery, put it back and restarted the phone, and it seems to be okay... stock os, all widgets where I left them, everything looks good.

Suggestions? Am I supposed to put PC36IMG on my sdcard manually before attempting this? I thought I read other threads of ppl doing this, but video didn't mention anything of it.

I'm a little scared to try again... seems to be okay after I smurfed up the first time, don't wanna tempt lightening twice...

My apologies in advance if I have made myself look like an idiot with this post.

And if the new OTA has made my phone un-rootable........ I am going to be so mad at myself for accepting it before rooting......

You can reroot with unrevoked but DONT TAKE OTA UPDATES IF YOU ARE ROOTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

duly noted, but for me, it's not rerooting... i was never rooted, never attempted until after i applied this latest ota.

so, i didn't take an OTA update rooted, my phone was still stock when i took the ota

Whoops, did not read the part about "never being rooted before" too bad to, my post was epic!

lol yeah that was awesome dude.

unfortunately, i wasn't intelligent enough to root before the latest ota. my friend suggested that perhaps something is screwed up on my computer end because im a linux noob, he suggested i try the window version.

im tempted... but after one failed attempt, im a lil scared
