Help Understanding initial Exchange Contact sync

I've read some of the threads re: Contacts and I'm more confused than ever.

Today I set up my ExchangeActiveSync.

I am getting email from work with no problem (yippe). But for the longest time I was sure I was not getting any contacts; when I compose a Mail message and start entering a recipient's name (some one from the office) nothing comes up.

A buddy at work has the same phone and he says when he starts typing a recipient name, he gets matches from the his company contacts. WTH?

I did a bit of poking around and stumbled on this: if I go to People : Groups : CompanyDirectory and do a search, I can find people from my company's contacts. But these is slow - is this accessing the contacts from my phone or actually going through Exchange?

When I pull up a contact this way, I have the option of "Adding the contact to People". When I do this, the contact is now in my People list and I can use it as I would use any of my other contacts.

So basically I'm confused here. Are Exchange contacts NOT supposed to be brought over to your phone? If not, how the heck am I supposed to fill in recipients when composing company emails?

Thanks for any insight on this. I love the phone and apps overall but some things are mystifying.

From what I understand:

My Setup:
Personal Gmail Account (Not on HTC) (just gmail associated with phone).
Work email setup through HTC Sync (active sync through exchange).

If I add a new contact I have 3 options.

1. Add to my GMAIL account - goes to GMAIL
2. Add to my Exchange Activesync account - goes to my exchange
3. Add to Phone - stays on phone does not sync.

All my contacts show up under People. If I have the same contact in Gmail and exchange I get (or can add) "link" the 2 accounts together (you can also do this with Twitter, Facebook and I think Flicker.

To Answer your question if you selected Contacts when setting up (go to settings in that account) you can enable/disable them from syncing or not.

Thanks, that sort-of helps. But my problem isn't so much to do with getting the contacts to sync as it is getting them to show up on my phone at all. As I mentioned above, the only way I can see any work contacts is to go through People : Online Directories : Company Directory. Even then, the list of work contacts doesn't "show up". I have to search for work people by name, one by one.

My expectation was that after I told ExchangeSync to sync up my contacts, the next time I composed an email, those work contacts would be available to me when I got to fill in the recipients (but they are not)

Stupid question, but contacts is set for sync?

Just to confirm, you can see the contacts in people but when you compose a email, they do not populate when typing?

Do any contacts populate when composing? If so are they your gmail?

Trying to narrow down a solution for you....

Having the same issue as michaelveloz and don't see where this got resolved. Contact is set for sync, the only ones that autopopulate are gmail (personal) contacts, none from the company directory will pop up at all. When I do a search I have the company directory option but there's nobody in it, I actually have to go to People, Groups, and then start my search to get a company contact. Let me know if anyone can help.
