Are you using nandroid back up? If so thats why your icons are disappearing. You can always add whatever ones you want back by going into the app drawer press and holding on the one you want to place on the screen you want to place it on.

after i rooted my telus milestone with androot, my icons started diasappearing, tried shutting down and restarting, but they are still gone. then i took off androot and everything is normal again. is there a better way to root? i am running 2.1update1

Whatever the cause it isn't Universal Androot that's doing it, simply the fact that you are rooted. Some application you have given root access is doing something you don't want it to do; this will happen whatever method you use to root the phone, you need to isolate the app or service that is causing the problem and correct it.

how do i figure out what app is causing my problem though?

Clear out your superuser whitelist so nothing has root privileges. The first time a program requests root access, grant it but allow no others at this time.

Test. If you see no bad effects, allow the next request for root access to succeed.

Repeat testing until your icons vanish. The last app you allowed root access to is probably the culprit.
