Root Rooting and cleaning my stock evo..Help

Hello fellas I'm new to android and these forums, I've had my evo for like 3 weeks and it just seems choppy and overkill for what I need..
I wanted to just clean it out root for tethering and remove bloatware,I would like it as stock as possible but with a cleaner os.I only need about 20% of the apps and services that came with it everything else can go,more battery life would be a dream..

So what's the safest way and solid way to do this and can it be done..?

I been reading up on unrevoked and it seems simple but will it accomplish what I want?

I would like to reset the phone to factory and get a back up to store on sd card and pc just incase I wanna set it back some day for resale..

Any how any and all help is appreciate it just shoot me what are my best safest options..

Any one in the Victorville Ca. Area who is good at this, if you can extend your service let me know meanwhile i'll be doing research..

Thanks guys..

Hi, welcome to the forums!!! Great place to learn for beginners (don't worry I'm still considered one of them).
Here is the best place for rooting for beginners I used it my self and worked great!

Unrevoked is the safest and easiet method for rooting, especially if your a beginner.
You can even use the stock rom until you get more familier loading roms. Make sure you download Titanium back-up upon rooting. This will back up everything. Rom manager is good to use also. That will link will explain most of your question and needs.

I agree with Unrevoked however i don't like rom manager.
Also after you root with unrevoked you should consider flashing amon-ra recovery.

I like clockwork on my Incredible but on the EVO amon-ra is king :)
rom manager is not trustworthy imho and it doesn't work with amon-ra so i can't use it anyway.
