Hello

Just got my new HTC Desire HD in the UK and delighted with it. A big upgrade from my iPhone 3G

I have a few newbie questions which I was wondering if anyone would mind answering. Sorry if they are FAQs but I can't seem to find quite the answers on the rest of the forums:

Thank you.

1. Syncing with a Mac and iTunes. I don't really need any of the paid for apps I don't think. All I want to do is copy a few playlists across rather than my whole iTunes library. I also want to move the photos that iTunes used to sync with my iPhone and some movies for my son to watch.

I am more than happy to copy the relevant directories to the SD card but would prefer a syncing option for at least the playlists. If I can't do it with iTunes is there a way to set up a simple script to sync the relevant folders.

2. What resolution do I need to put a photo as a background for the HTC Sense desktop so that as I move screens the photo moves slightly?

3. How are people working with Dropbox, Quickoffice and syncing? I want to be able to work on documents, sync them back to Dropbox but not necessarily keep them on the phone once done. Do I just need to go into the phone and delete them periodically?

4. Will the various attachments downloaded with emails be deleted as the emails "expire". I have said to keep 200 emails but the attachments folder fills. If I have to do some routine clearing out that is fine but I just don't know the answer.

5. Are there any other places where I can get widgets from. I don't like the RSS newsreader very much but like having it as a widget if that makes sense. I'd prefer a threaded reader.

6. What can I delete from the 8GB memory card, I only have 5GB without adding anything to it?

7. Any suggestions for apps, I don't play a lot of games but do a lot of office type stuff on my phone. I work in clinical medicine and read a lot of PDFs etc.

8. Any other suggestions to enjoy what seems like a great device.

Many thanks for reading this far!

1. No idea about the iTunes, never used them, never will. Try doing it via WinAmp or WMP.
2. You can use any photo really. When setting it as a wallpaper you'll be able to crop it (afair).
3. I normally just download the files to view them, I can't be bothered editing anything on a mobile. I'm afraid you can't edit anything that's not downloaded. And yes, for the time being after uploading you have to delete the file yourself. Try using one of the files managers from the market.
4. (...).
5. Market dude.
6. See: Point 5. Also take a look through these forums in the Apps section. There're plenty of recommendations.

1:

iTunes does pick up HTC phones so you should be able to sync music no problem at all..Personally I hate iTunes..I use MediaMonkey..wayy better in every sense of..well...everything!.

Also worth noting you can put the Desire HD into USB mount mode and just copy everything through

2:

Unknown, but i'll try to find out for you

3:

Don't use any of that so can't answer

4:

Are you referring to the Google Mail app itself or the HTC Mail one?

5:

Theres Google Reader in the android market..very good :)

6:

HTC Sync software?..I would just get a 32gb card in all honesty..better safer than sorry :)

7:

3G Watchdog
TasKiller
Rail Planner Live
GReader
Google Sky Map xD
Your Orange (if your an orange customer)
Orange Wednesdays
Engadget?
Daily Horoscope

Really depends what you want.

8:

Make it your own, whether it be different widgets, live wallpapers etc

Sorry to bump, anyone got any thoughts?

We are only human, contrary to belief, i don't live on here lol.

Hello

Thank you for your kind replies.

I think I am going to go for a 32GB card. I've put some music and photos on and am already full and can't download any software to it.

What is the procedure for putting a new card in, can I just copy the current card to my Mac and then copy it back to the new card? Will this pick up the various hidden files and so on?

My iTunes doesn't seem to pick up the DHD. I have copied the songs and music manually, which is fine for now, but I would like a more elegant solution.

I was using the HTC Mail app but have moved to the Androind one, same question still applies, I guess?

So far sound Jolti a brilliant calendar application.

As for photos for the background, if you select an existing photo it asks you to crop it to to the correct dimensions with a little square gadget on your photo. Hard to explain but obvious when you see it.

Thanks again

My general impression is that it is getting better every day but I am also finding little things that I miss from the iPhone/Mac ecosystem or things that need a bit more tweaking to sort out. Overall still excellent though.

I'll let you know what I find, it will have to wait until next month.

Sorry, not very clear now I read it again...

What I mean is that I now have an 8GB card with various files and folders on it the majority of them have been put there by HTC so presumably at least some of them are important.

If I now get a 32GB card is there an established process for moving everything from the 8GB card to the 32GB card which does not upset Android or the phone?

Thanks for clearing it up..Want to know what I did..I just copied the entire contents of the 8GB SD card bundled with the phone to my desktop and then copied it to the 32GB one :) lol..easiest and safest option..just incase anything goes pearshaped, its got all the backup files, etc
