Help Desire Software Upgrade

I am about to purchuse a new desire from Cellular South. Is it possible to upgrade it to 2.2? I didnt know if the carrier has anything to do with this. Also, with android can you take off the data services when you dont need it? My plan is unlimited, but i live in a rural are and the constant searching would kill the battery, id like to just use the wifi. Thanks

You definitely can upgrade to 2.2 using a stock froyo 2.2 RUU.

Yes you can turn on/off mobile APN(data) and just enable wifi.

Yes correct, it is NOT rooting, you're just flashing an updated ROM.

I'm not an expert, but I have been waiting for an official US Cellular Froyo update for several months and it is still not available. We are hoping sometime this month but have been told in some threads it could be next year before it is available. Flashing update will void your warranty, so if you're like me, you will probably be waiting a while for 2.2.

If Cellular south is a Cdma carrier like US cellular then you CANNOT flash the stock Ruu on it because that is for GSM only and will BRICK your phone' if the update happens. What should happen if you try the update it should read that it is not GSM and stop the update but if it does not then it will brick your phone!!!!!

I googled Cellular South and it is a CDMA PHONE so DO NOT USE THE STOCK RUU it WILL brick your phone and you will have wasted the money on a useless phone. There are no CDMA updates for this phone, you will have to wait for your carrier to release the update, if they ever do!!!!

ooh that woulda been bad if it its CDMA. I'm in Canada using Telus so I'm not sure about US carriers.

Wow good thing i checked back before i did the update. Good to know it wont work. THANKS. I was wanting this for the apps to sd function, but oh well.

i am having problem with my htc desire s. is is not booting naturally. at the time of power ON it shows some MENU : FASTBOOT, RECOVERY,CLEAR STORAGE, SIMLOCK.I think android s/w needs upgrade or has got currept. WHAT to DO?

Hi manishmahant, and welcome to AF

Sorry to hear that. My guess is either software corruption or that your volume key is stuck - that is the hboot menu, which you will enter if you boot the phone while pressing the volume down key, so if the key is stuck it may well take you to that menu. Can you use the volume keys to navigate through the menu? If not, it may be that the key is the problem.

For advice on the Desire S the best place to ask would be HTC Desire S - Android Forums. They can advise you on e.g. the correct software if you try reflashing the phone, which people here in the Desire forum won't know.
