New here and have a little confusion

I'm new here so i do not know the process for posting.
Currently, I am the owner of a blackberry torch and i really do not like the phone as it is boring. I Have been interested in an Iphone for such a long time and i finally got the phone and i finally played with one and it is rather boring but it has a very nice screen.

I have been reading on android and it really seems interesting but there are so many and it is overwhelming choosing a carrier and choosing the right phone.

Things i need in a phone
1. A Phone first. It seems like so many people are all about the features but i need a phone
2. Great Camera
3. Music player/Video player
4. Facebook & Social networking integration
5. Not too laggy
6. Good applications

I have been checking out windows phone 7 and they seem nice but i have heard horror stories about windows mobile.

As of right now, I am looking at At&t and t-mobile.
Sprint seems totally focused on Android as does Verizon.

What are some good selling points about At&t and their android and windows phone selection as well as t-mobile.

I like t-mobile and their pricing and their phones but it seems like their coverage is not the best

I have heard bad things about at&t as well.
I currently have At&t with my parents and i am looking to branch out.
Let me know your opinions

honestly. from the way your post makes you seem you're better off with a motorola Backflip from AT&T. 50 bucks i believe it is now with a 2 year contract.
it is android so you have app's and it runs on Motorola UI the "motorblur" and motorblur is amazing at social networking. i wish i had motorblur on my captivate LOL. since its android it has a good mp3 player by default. it gets the job done. It has a 5.0 mp cam but it isnt as goood with the captivate the captivate has a 5mp as well but it feels and looks like an 8mp camera. but for what you need the backflip is the way to go. the GPS on the captivate isnt as good some people dont mind but since im a facebook and twitter addict using facebook places and post tweets with your location isnt as accurate as it would be with a good gps. its up to you though. id love to have the backflip lol

If this is your wishlist, I believe the Captivate will satisfy you. The only issue that I see on your list that may be an issue is the lack of an LED flash for the camera. Other than that, I think the Cappy will get you all 6 requirements.

For me, the lack of a functioning GPS is a show stopper, as I travel for work and need the mapping.

There are only 3 phones that I would consider with AT&T. 1) Cappy, 2) iPhone 4, and 3) the new Samsung Focus (WP7).

I think the new Windows OS will be a lot better than prior Windows products. I have not played with it yet, but everything I have read gives WP7 two thumbs up. Will see it tomorrow on launch date.

As far as I know, the Captivate is having issues with Facebook contact integration. However, there is a Facebook app for Android that has been recently updated to bring it (almost) to par with the iPhone Facebook app.

There are also issues with the phone being laggy and the GPS functionality.

I have had both an Android device and an iPhone. If you're moving away from Blackberry because it's boring, get an Android. The customizations are endless.

So, here's my advice:
Go with Verizon because they seem to have the best Android selection. They also have the strongest network IMO (CDMA also works great in weak signal situations). They may also be launching their LTE network in your area; look it up. If not Verizon, check out T-Mobile and the myTouch 4G. Also, if you like the blackberry's hard keyboard, there's a Droid Pro coming out that looks very similar to the blackberry. DROID Pro by MOTOROLA - Business Cell Phone - Overview - Motorola, Inc. In terms of which Android phone to get, HTC seems to be on the money with Android. They have a great UI ("Sense"). If GPS/Maps are important to you, they're going to be making some huge improvements in Maps in terms of application speed (not having to download the map each time). They're ahead of the game IMO.

I am in the exact same boat as you. I read the engadget review, and they said their GPS was fine, however like most of us, the captivate GPS worked once or twice and then gave up.

I read another review (I cant remember where) of the focus, and they said their gps had trouble locking. To be honest, I dont know if the GPS is a deal breaker or not since I have gotten used to the captivate, and the other option for me (the HTC surround) seemed to be a cool idea executed poorly.

I think if i had to choose between the two, Id go with the samsung first, and if i find myself hating the GPS, i think i could easily trade for an HTC surround through craigslist

android phone will meet your needs...
there are many choices to pick from...

but you really need to do research first into the carrier that will work best for you.. in the area you use most and important to you.

att should be last on your list... they disable the android phones too much.. Backflip is a joke!

verzion is good.. but expensive.

Sprint and Tmobile are cheaper.. but you need to see how they perform in your area.

Sprint has great coverage.. and roam free on Verizon's network.

on Tmobile.. try G2 or Mytouch 4G

on Sprint.. EVO or EPIC

Best Advice = Go to a AT&T store and a T-Mobile store and play with the devices themselves. If I had T-mobile, I would go with the G2. If I had AT&T, I would go with the captivate. Android is awesome and Windows Phone 7 is an HUGE advancement from the older 6.X series devices...but here are a couple of thoughts:

1) The one you choose will most likely be "the best". I say this because after being with Android for a year, I'm hooked. I'm used to the way the OS works and things that may have been "new" to me at first are now second nature and seem to be "the way it SHOULD be." If you choose Windows7, you will most likely feel the same way. Neither OS will be going away anytime soon and both seem to offer good mobile experiences.

2) No spec sheet or recommendation can tell you how a phone will "feel" to you. I would read some reviews or watch some videos on YouTube (phone dog, phandroid, cnet). Get an idea of the differences of the phones and the platforms...then get to a store for some hands on time. Most likely, you will find the right phone for you.

3) Most people tell you to get the phone they have (or the phone they are going to buy). My wife and I will be getting new phones this month and we will be getting 2 different phones most likely cause we have different wants and needs.

ALL high end phones should have good call quality. I believe all carriers will give you 30 days to evaluate the phone and will offer some sort of second chance if you don't like the phone you pick.

Good luck in your search. New phones will be probably be coming out in a flurry leading up to Christmas so keep your eyes open for upcoming devices during the next month.

I tried to get one today! my local AT&T cor store wouldnt sell it to me outside of contract...wasnt too happy about that. None of the retailers here sell them yet....i checked radio shack, walmart, target, best buy, and one other i forgot.

Im definitely going to pick up the focus when I can....Really cant wait to watch netflix! that is a HUGE app for me. especially for when work gets slow!

Yeah I've too noticed the wpcentral forums are pretty slow. I've also had some problems with links leading to nowhere, etc. probably stemming from their name change from wmexperts to wpcentral. There is always the xda developer forums which at least have windows phone 7 sections as well as an HD7 section. I know you didn't get an HTC but the same principles will apply I'm sure. They're already a lot busier than wpcentral.

Of course it all depends on where you live, but I had T-Mobile for years and had no issues. The carrier I've had the most problems with dropped calls has been AT&T, even when it showed I had great coverage. I really like the HD7 so far, but I am a bit jealous of the Focus screen. I just couldn't deal again with the dropped calls plus the 2 GB data cap considering I can stream netflix on my phone now.

i like his...i love how big it is
and wp7 UI Looks great on the screen

and the reception is on par with my focus/captivate...0-2 bars

but yea i guess us at&t customers are going to be stuck to wifi trying to use netflix
