Why wait for T-Mobile's Froyo

I got the courage yesterday to Flash AOSP ish JK2 1.1 Official FROYO (my first flash). It was easy, using ROM manager on the Market.

Its fast, pretty, the GPS is pretty good and I'm using USB tethering to write this now.

The difference between 2.1 and 2.2 is really worth it. Mobile AP (which I will try next), Flash, WIFI calling, the really pretty waves on the beach live wallpaper. Ryan OCLF works too.

I feel like now I will be able to flash back to stock when the Official OTA update comes out and try that for a while, then go on to other ROMs and settle on the best.

Thats correct. You can do a backup of your apps but don't use your old app data.

Is there an official ETA for Froyo yet from Samsung? Im avoiding custom roms but if they arent going to deliver the goods this year, I'll do what you do.

I'm running the "UnOfficial" T-Mobile version (leaked) of 2.2 from Eugene...

I'll wait for the builds based on the Official release before I flash again.

I was running the Unofficial Leak Froyo for about 4 days and on the 4th day I woke up to fin RIL errors and could not use text, voice or data functions so I flashed back to JFD and did JI6 VIA Mini KIES. It was nice to test out Froyo on my Vibrant and I really liked it but I guess I will wait for the official OTA.

you know, i think next time i'll get the nexus 2.. i mean, the original nexus is getting support up to gingerbread at the very least, and it's 6 months older than the vibrant. f samsung!

For all who are clamoring for Froyo/Gingerbread here is an interesting perspective which surfaced over at XDA - Be careful what you wish for, there may be ulterior motives behind that shiny new OS you so desparately want:

What "He Who Is Sworn to Do No Evil" does not want you to know. (Or: Google Meets Pocahontas.).

The Android OS and many of the thousands of apps are free, right? Wrong! Nothing in life is free. The heart and soul of Google and others in this business is data collection and monetization of the collected data. Doing so takes lots of CPU cycles, including all of yours that these companies can possibly wrangle from you without upsetting you too much.

Google and company trades you a shiny new OS and app toys in exchange for your data, which they have thus far managed to monetize in amounts greater than the GNPs of many countries.

I wonder how many of those screaming for Froyo and Gingerbread realize that increasingly intrusive CPU cycle-hungry data collection tools will be embedded in every succeeding version of the shiny new OS/app toys.

I believe that the rate of increase of those cycle-stealing data collection tools over time will be limited only by the rate of hardware performance improvements over that same time, such that the natives do not get too restless due to lag, battery drain, etc.

Could it be that Google has the Android Community hypnotized into begging for the very thing that makes Google's Android unit so profitable? Keep drinking that Kool Aid.

By extension I guess we can project that the Vibrant is also destined to receive fabulous support through Gingerbread and beyond - just like the Nexus!

Exactly. So many of us constantly yearn and gripe about not getting the newest and greatest, turning our heads to the fact that it will prostitute our information over to the highest bidder at any moment (aka, the government).

Do you all really want big brother knowing who you call and what you say, not to mention the text/graphics of every text and multimedia message you send, as well as every search term you've used while on your smartphone? It doesn't stop there.

Granted, the situation is pretty much mandated unless we stick with old dumb phones, but we're only enabling them to do what they want behind closed doors when we focus on the "enhancements" of the newest OS.

If a phone can text, it can be seen or brought back to see if big brother wants or needs to. You dont need an Android phone for that to happen.

Nothing wrong (so far) with the basic UnOfficial 2.2. (On week 2!)

tried out Axura 2.0.3 and Obsidian V3 yesterday, decided I liked Obsidian based on looks. Gonna try it out and see if I like it enough to stay with it. Android flashing is so much smoother than winmo, When I would flash a winmo ROM I would spend a good couple hours reinstalling everything, with Android it's pretty much all there once I log into Google LOL

You aren't lucky then because they released v4.2. Now they have an overkill rfs lagfix that basically converts all your data over to anything but rfs. So far it is blazing fast for me but...external sd card is mounting as a cdrom drive.

I installed Onyx R4.2 this morning...my Vibrant has never been happier! I've read posts about the external SD card...mine won't mount at all. Not a big deal, as the internal SD is fine (and didn't get wiped when I flashed). This ROM is stoopid, screaming fast.

Yea, it isn't that big of a deal as the internal sd card not being access. Still, hope they fix that problem. So far that's the only one issue I have so far.

By the way, anyone who was on v3 Obsidian back then noticed it was still laggy as hell as if Voodoo wasn't working? It would 'lag' so many times, which is odd because Fusion with Voodoo was smooth sailing.

yeah I saw the 4.2 came out and looked at the changelog but I do not think I will go with that, at least not until it has been tested in the wild and bugs worked out. R3 is quite fast and I am more than happy with it.

Obsidian V3 has the stock kernel and there's no OC/UV option. Between that and the stock TouchWiz launcher it's no surprise that some lag would still be present, even with the mods put in place.

Voodoo makes a world of difference, at least it always has for me. I'm now running Onyx R4.2 with one of the more advanced lag fixes. So far so good with the exception of not being able to mount the external SD. Not a big deal and one I expect will be remedied in time.

I'm running the "UnOfficial" T-Mobile version (leaked) of 2.2 from Eugene since last night. I noticed that when I opened up a web page, I get a "data connectivity problem" error message! But when I'm on wifi, I'm able to load a page.

When I flashed the ROM last night, it loaded right away skipping the part where I had to delete user data and clearing the cache. But I read with the updated version, that I didn't have to do that anymore. But I'm guessing it's still causing some problems??

Has anyone ran into this data connectivity issue? Do you think I need to get into recovery mode and clear user data and clean cache?

Any suggestions?
