opening up mobile network on my old Hero

I upgraded to my Htc Evo so my Hero is sitting here collecting dust. I want to give this phone to my son so he can text and play games without activating to sprint again.

But heres the Question:

Is there a way to root this hero to unlock the sprint mobile network so that he can text anytime and anywhere the phone is on? Right now he can only do it through wifi.

I appreciate any information thanks

I'm a GSM Hero user (I moved your thread for you ), but don't believe there's any way to send data over the mobile network without activating the phone. That's certainly the case with GSM phones that take SIM cards.

So there's nothing you can do on your end to get the phone/3G functions working; Sprint aren't going to let unactivated phones access their network so it doesn't matter what you do.

Somehow hacking the phone to access their network without activating is likely illegal anyway, even if it were possible.

If you're in a Cricket service area you can have the phone flashed to Cricket and use one of their low cost monthly plans.
