Q regarding battery/charging

Hi, I will recieve my Hero in a couple of days. Been reading a lot about the Hero on this forum since this is my first smartphone.

One question still remains: To charge or not to charge?


HTC says:

"New batteries are not charged when shipped. Before you start using your phone, you need to install and charge the battery for 8 hours."



Some forum users say:

"So, the best way to charge a Li-Ion battery? When you first get it, let it drain completely and then charge it completely. After that first charge, you can do it however it's convenient for you, but it's suggested that you drain it completely and charge it completely once every 30 or so cycles." -quantumrand


So what do I do? Let it drain completely the first time I use the Hero, or jam the mini-usb cable in?

I really don't think it matters with Li-Ion batteries because they don't have "memory" issue that older batteries used to. In fact I'm pretty sure you shouldn't deliberately drain it.

Just charge it fully when you get it. Then use it. When it alerts you that the battery is low, charge it again. And continue. Pretty simple

So out of that quote we can speculate if the li-battery still have some minor gain of a complete discharge upon first time use?

There really isn't any guarantee of improved battery life by discharging completely...any gain would most likely be minimal and would be achieved through normal use anyway.

Discharge if you think it'll help...it'll be a placebo affect more than anything though

Excelent point.

Don't know why I got so interested in this charging thingy, but it would be frustrating to completely discharge it upon first time use and then later learn that you absolutely under no circumstance should discharge the battery upon first time use- and vica versa.
