I see that Palm is planning another big update for the Pre (and Pixi) which, among other things, will remove the 64MB app limit, improve overall performance, stability and speed, and improve WIFI reception. This is good news for Pre & Pixi owners but the thing which really baffles me about this news is the reported reason behind the update: According to many popular blogs and articles in tech journals and websites, Palm is issuing this update in response to "a disappointing quarter that showed a 4 percent decrease in sales and a 60 percent drop in revenue."
What I find most perplexing is why it took disappointing sales to instigate an update? Wouldn't it have been better to simply include those improvements in the first place instead of waiting for people to start voting with their wallets? I find this mentality a bit disturbing in more than one way including how it might be affecting us Hero owners: The Hero (and Eris) seem to be a big success, but could that be tempering any sense of urgency HTC and Sprint might have to bring the product to it's potential?
But for this theory to work, one must assume that HTC and/or Sprint are actually dragging their heels and I haven't seen any compelling evidence that they are yet. About the only thing I can rightfully accuse them of at this point is an overly ambiguous timeline.
On the other side of the coin, these blogs and articles have also given me some reason for some wishful thinking: It's being widely suggested that Palm will release the update in conjunction with the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January and it's my hope that HTC might do the same with their Android 2.x update. The CES is the place for big announcements so it could happen.
