I was running my fingernail across the gold speaker cover strip on the back. I noticed in the middle that it pushes in quite a bit. It's like that part is not properly secured to the backplate.

Could someone else attempt this for me. I want to know if it's how it was constructed, or if it's just my unit.

Just run your fingernail with LIGHT pressure across the speaker cover. See if it pushes in in the middle.

Thanks.

Yeah, the speaker grill pushes down in the bottom middle because theres no ledge for it to be glued to. I thought it was stereo speakers a left and a right but like the second day I had it. I noticed the little bend in the grill and thought the same. Then I got sad when I realized it was just 1 speaker. rest is for aesthetics. It's pretty damn loud and clear so I'm not complaining.

I posted this issue to the android support forums. I managed to damage my droid surprisingly easily.

Man, speaker covers peeling off or denting, gold foil flaking off the camera button, loose speaker jacks causing crackling...
What's next, the sticker on the back under the camera peeling off?

All in a sturdy phone with a metal chassis and a Corning Gorilla Glass screen.
*sigh*
Now I'm more paranoid than ever about something happening to it.

Yea, I replaced my first one because of a crackling headphone jack. I think they are going to look at me like I'm crazy when I bring in my second droid for an exchange because of the speaker cover.

If this phone was made of titanium all round, trust me, somebody would find some way to break it.

Now that people know they can dent the area over the speaker, we'll mysteriously see tons of these problems now as the 'experimenters' now have to test this theory and find something else to whine about.

Do you happen to work for motorola? Not sure why you would try to defend the shitty design. I would blame the poor design not the people.

It seems like you are whining about people having a legit issue with a poor design on the phone. the rest of phone is built like a tank and then they put a paper sticker to cover a large gap with no support behind it.

this is extremely easy to do when you try to slide the battery cover on. i did it to mine about a month ago and then posted a warning in this forum. since then i have seen 4 or 5 posts from other people that did the same thing on accident.

I've taken the cover on and off several times and never for once thought to stick my finger in that spot. All that's needed is a little upward pressure on the cover using both thumbs and voila. Even if you do use your finger it should be done with caution. To create such a dent, it means you applied too much downward force. Sorry but I can't the blame the phone there.

And no I don't work for Motorola. Next time just use a little common sense.

Yeah because they don't expect you to stick your finger there. Maybe they should do like the military and put a big 'OPEN HERE' 'CLOSE HERE' label with a big arrow.

Whatever dude. if you want to settle for something that is built that way go for it. If we settle for stuff like this without expressing our opinion there will never be any improvements made for future releases of the phone.

There are even people that had this happen to them when the phone was in there pocket and they were not sure how the dent got there. Guess they should have used some common sense and not put their phones in their pocket.

I would imagine 95% of the people in here would agree with me that you shouldn

Wow. So you’re saying all the people that have done this have no common sense?

I am pretty sure that accidentally putting your finger through a soft piece of plastic with no support behind it has nothing to do with common sense. The gap below the piece of plastic is hidden so this would obviously not be “common”. Maybe you should look up the term so you know what you are talking about.

And maybe Motorola should have used some common sense and not used a flimsy piece of paper/plastic with no support behind it for a speaker grill.

And for you to come into the forums and tell people that they are whining about a poor design and not expect to have somebody respond is not using common sense either.

You're NOT supposed to stick your finger in the speaker grill, the end. There's nothing to argue about. If this was a common issue there'd be tons of threads about it. Thankfully most people are more careful.

YOU bent it because YOU messed up. If you were careful it would not have happened. Learn to take some responsibility rather than blame others.

Everyone raves about how clear everything is when it comes to the speaker phone. Ever thought that maybe they decided to leave that area around it free of obstructions so we can enjoy a nice, loud, clear speaker phone?

BTW, I keep my phone in my front pants pocket. However, I don't put anything in there with it. Why? Because If I do, something like this could happen and it would be MY fault.

Do you even know the meaning of the word troll? I'm a member of at least 6 Android forums and I haven't seen this as a major topic anywhere.
This isn't about settling for less, it's really about personal responsibility, something you don't seem to know much about. People like you that whine about every little thing and return phones on a dime are the ones that make it tough for people with legit issues.

And please, let the mods do their work. I have the same right as you to speak my mind. This is a public forum the last time I checked.

Seriously dude.. don’t you have anything better to do than whine? I am just defending the people in this thread as they would like to simply discuss something without being harassed.

Phones should be built in consideration that they are going to be handled with hands and fingers on a daily basis. If this was a home speaker or car speaker I would agree with you 100% but it’s not. If we have to watch where we put our hand/fingers on something that is handled every day then what’s the point?

I owned up to my mistake and never expected Motorola or Verizon to replace it. Honestly you can’t even notice the tear on mine and it does not bother me. I am just providing support for others that did the same thing. I agree that people asking for a replacement phone just because of this would be a little unrealistic as it’s not a manufacturing issue; it’s just simply just a bad design. They should know better that a sticker over a thumb sized hole would get punctured.

I sure hope you are not an engineer for any company J
