Help Droid has become insanely slow and almost unusable

Hi all,

looking for some ideas on my phone issues. My droid has become insanely slow and some times freezes. Launching applications take a long time. When exiting an application I get the wallpaper of wait for 20 seconds before homescreen icons appear. Some times when I get an incoming call the screen freezes so I can't answer even though it's still ringing.

It's my work phone so it is stock and hasn't been rooted. I've downloaded a cache cleaner which doesn't seem to help. I've also done the system boot - clear cache as well.

If anyone has ideas please let me know.

Would like to buy a new phone but waiting for something great.. but at this point if I can't take calls for work I'm really worried.

if you have verizon insurance get it replaced, or buy the thunderbolt which should be coming out on march 17th.

thanks for quick response. I do have insurance. So is it a hardware issue? Do they commonly get slower over time? this is a replacement I got 6 months ago so it's refurbed.

While it is not guaranteed to work, you could always try the factor reset, and see if that helps your issue.

How are you doing on your memory? I cleaned up some apps, caches, etc, to the point I've seen a noticeable difference in speed (40 MB free). Also, you could try cleaning up the SD card as well.

Without knowing what you have installed it's tough to make an educated guess.
The phone does slow every time I get app updates as it digests them.

You may have something retrieving data or syncing in the background.

I had the same thing happening. I did a factory reset to try to clean things up, and that make my droid somewhat faster and less home screen lag. Just be aware that after you reset, and sign in with your google account again, it will probably download all your prevoius apps and data from before. I had hope to do a factory reset to get rid of basically everything and then just choose what do download, but instead all 150 of my apps tried to download at once. You can go in and manually cancel each one you dont want if that happens. There are also settings to not sync app data automatically which should disable this.

After this I also got a replacement droid, and that is even faster than my original after the factory reformat. However I can see it slowing down some already, but that is just how it goes, the droid 1 is old now, and all these new apps and updates are a little too much for it.

In terms of using the insurance, you don't want to actually claim the insurance. What Verizon told me is that if you are paying for the max insurance plan for your droid, that it also extends the hardware warranty on the droid forever it seems.

Basically if you file a insurance claim, you have to pay a deductible which is like $100, which would be pretty dumb, because you can basically get a droid for that price on ebay which is likely similar condition to their factory refurbished phones they send you.
But if you say its a hardware issue with the phone, they just will just send you a new shell of the phone for free. (if you had that full insurance). I did that, got a free refurb droid, and now its working somewhat better. I

Needless to say I'm now going to cancel the insurance because its pretty much useless for that phone this old.

I'm having the EXACT same issues as you and agree that it's incredibly frustrating. If rooting increases performance, I'm willing to give it a go.

I have had the same problem for the last 6 months, almost getting to the point that I wanted to throw my sluggish phone out the window. I have done factory resets, and obtained temporary relief--but eventually, the problem has crawled back within a week or so.

BUT--in the last month or so, my battery became unmanageable--draining in like half a day, and needing multiple recharges just to make it through the day. I finally broke down and ordered a new Motorola battery on ebay (appears to be an original), for like $5. Figured worth it to get me the next few months until I can get a new phone from Verizon.

The battery works great. More importantly, ALL the sluggishness and slowness in my Droid is gone? Not sure why, or how this could be--but I am not longer stuck waiting for the Home screen to load--and programs load now like they used to. And I can get through one day without having to recharge constantly.

I imagine others might be explain why this works--but so far, it seems like that might be a solution to your problem, especially if your phone is now over a year old, like mine?

I've had my Droid 2 since June and it has become so slow it is unusable. I am at a loss to fix it. It is stock, unrooted, and I was wondering if rooting it would help.I do have a battery manager on it, Juice Defender, and I have read that the processor speed is reduced dependent on battery power. It was slow, however, before installing that ap. Has anyone else noticed an improvement after replacing the battery?

I removed my memory card and restored my phone to factory setting. I have never replaced the memory card. I'll get a new one. This has solved my problem. I imagine there was something on that card that was corrupting my phone.
