Rogers Update: 911 Fix for Rogers HTC Dream and Magic is Ready

Hi All - Wanted to share some important information with you:

A mandatory software update is now available for Rogers HTC Dream and Magic customers to ensure 911 calls can be completed on these devices. These customers need to go immediately to Redirect to the right page or Redirect to the right page on a PC to download the update. Users of Windows 7 or Macintosh will need to call 1-888-Rogers1 for update instructions. Customers will need to backup any personal items before the update process.

Customers who have not downloaded this software update could have problems accessing 911. As a result, we are taking the precautionary measure of temporarily disabling internet access for Dream and Magic users on Sunday January 24 at 6:00AM (EST). Voice and text messaging will not be impacted. By disabling internet access, we can ensure that 911 calls are completed for all our Dream and Magic customers. Once a customer completes the software update, his/her internet access will be re-enabled within 24 hours.

Temporarily disabling internet access is the only decision we could make to ensure all customers can make 911 calls. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. Dream and Magic customers on data plans will automatically be credited for one month of data fees (excluding roaming). This credit will show up on invoices within 60 days. We take this matter very seriously and continue to investigate the way this issue was addressed to determine how we can improve our internal and external processes.

Thanks,
-Mary

is this only an update that fixes the 911 bug or is it the sense ui update as well?

according to the .pdf on the update site its also senseui as well..

EDIT2: spoke to the csr for windows 7 users apparently they will be releasing some sort of patch which will fix the problem since htc software doesnt work with win7 according to him the patch thats going to be released will be put on the sd card and then everything happens from there..i asked if this 'patch' also enables senseui but he didnt seem to know what i was talking about..

Just got the text message from Rogers re 911 update. They are not only making it mandatory, but threatening to CUT OFF your phone's internet access until you update!!!!

Further more, it will NOT be OTA, but by download to your computer. There are special instructions for Mac and Windows 7? I guarantee there will be users who will not be able to figure this out. They will lose their internet access via data, and they will not have phones with a 911 fix.

I want to return my frakking Magic and go to another provider.

MAJOR FAIL ROGERS!

Mary, you guys screwed it all up. Again.

oh boy. I got it too. I'll loose internet on the 24th and will get it back in 24hrs? First part suggests I'd better update or will loose the tubes. But the last part suggests that we'll loose it anyhow for 24 hrs. I'll assume that an update prevents loss of data.

I don't know if that's a major fail or just totally bizarre. I'm sure there's a regulatory <insert cover your ass speech> reason to force the upgrade but I hope they don't mean I'll loose internet for 24hrs either way. Not that I can't survive without it or that this couldn't happen by an act of happenstance but don't drop me off on purpose.

So I'll have to loose my beautiful 1.6 ROM just so I don't loose internet. And *then* can I put back my better than Rogers ROM that had the 911 fix since September? My phone doesn't have the bug now but I have to do flips to get back to normal. swell.

BTW, I ran that Sense 1.5 UI in early December (without the Rogers crap and 911 bugs). Very nice but I prefer my 1.6.

Oh well, let's see what happens.

(I have no plans to make a service call for any reason if this blows up. I'm sure they have "operators standing by" and my call is important to them, yada yada. But I'm also on a business plan and I'd have to call my guy who then calls Rogers who will do the dance)

the real question right now for me is how long theyre gonna make win7 and mac users wait..anyone wanna bet that it'll be a while before we get our 3g back

You gotta know somebody with an older computer or have one that you can pull out of the closet. If I had to, I have enough parts laying around to cobble one together. ;-)

^gonna be some angry non winxp users.

But there's a little humour on the site. If you have a Dream (and this doesn't apply anyway) you have to pick the white or black version. Now that's a 'special' ROM.

whoa.... just read the PDF and it says I have to install HTC Sync in order to do the update. 'scuse me? um, no, not installing that. Been there done that, hated it.

running as a test.....
k, just hangs. need to check debug and I hope it ain't picky about the USB driver, mine works fine for everything else on the Magic.
still no go, doesn't like the driver. I'm not doing this tonight anyway. ain't happy.

Welp Rogers, you had me for a few short months after years without a cell. Guess I'll be moving on now. That's enough for me.

Fail.

I'm disappointed, but not surprised, about how Rogres has handled this situation.

I received via SMS a warning a day or two ago that I need to turn off GPS on my Magic to ensure I was able to make 911 calls until a fix was released. No big deal for me--location services, even the "course" IP or cell tower method--are not essential to my needs (I only use location service like a "toy", and once in a rare while to get driving directions when I'm too lazy to type in a starting location).

However, I was REALLY annoyed when I got an SMS message referring me to a link to visit on my PC, which led me to a PDF on how to use the "rom update utility". I have some HUGE issues with this:

* the upgrade wipes your phone--I can deal with this because I am tech-savvy enough to find and use backup utilities, but 90% of users out there probably are FAR from technical enough to figure out how to do a FULL backup--apps, messages and all--and will end up very angry that they've lost data or had to waste time go to a Rogers store to get tech help.

* the upgrade REQUIRES a Win XP or Vista computer! I DON'T EVEN OWN A WINDOWS COMPUTER! I hear some with hacker skills can do a bit of surgery to insert a new driver to make it work with Win 7...but what good does that do me with my Mac computer and my Linux-based netbook? "OK...I guess I can wait a few days or weeks and do without GPS for a bit" I think...but hten there is THIS little gem:

* ALL HTC MAGIC AND DREAM USERS WILL HAVE INTERNET SERVICE DISABLED ON SUNDAY MORNING AND TO GET SERVICE BACK YOU NEED TO UPGRADE--or so suggests the SMS message.

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? I'd rather do without GPS than the ability to use my data plan at all! So, I've phones tech support, and the reps reply when I ask what I can do? after a bit of pause, he replies (and I quote EXACTLY): "I HAVE NO IDEA."

How is that for customer service?

Anyways, not his fault. Apparently, nearly NONE of the support reps have been briefed with info on this update! They literally know nothing more than what is already in the SMS messages and on the website. He queried a manager and was told that an update that did not require a Windows PC would be provided at a later date, but NOBODY could give me that date.

But here is something he mentioned: The only thing Rogers can determine with reasonable accuracy about your phone is the make and model--they CANNOT with any reasonable certainty determine what ROM revision you have beyond what it had on it when they gave it to you. If they DO turn off your internet it'll probably involve either a phone call or an SMS message reply they send you to turn it back on--at least this is what the rep figured would be the case.

So, in the end he suggested that if you do not have internet access by Monday and you need it before you can get to a Windows PC or an alternative fix not dependent on Windows, then just contact Rogers and tell them to turn it on anyways (but don't use GPS if you've not really upgraded).

The lamest thing about Roger's lame management, however, is that apparently the Android software project developers identified and fixed the issue IN SEPTEMBER!

This is very sad indeed. But what is sadder is that I signed up with Rogers because Telus customer service I was getting was EVEN WORSE. Maybe Bell would be better, but I have my doubts...
