Feeling Overwhelmed......

Hi everyone, I am slightly new to the forum and really new to my Moto Droid....... Just got it Last Monday. I have listened to the sales people talk about the "must have" apps etc. Then he pointed me to this site for further help and info so I have spent the last 7 days, (from 6pm until I cant stay up any longer) and all weekend long) reading, Trying to follow threads and even understand some of the more technical language.... and attempting some of the ideas that have been put out there. I am 35 and up until now I have always thought I was somewhat computer savvy. I gave up my Iphone for the droid and gave up my blackberry to get the Iphone.... no regrets but I gotta be honest, the Iphone was a piece of cake to figure out compared to the droid. I am almost scared to use apps on the moto droid because of some of the so called "problems" or technical issues people have had. I don't know if these things are occuring because of user error if you will, or if the apps are just not so great(no offense to any developers out there) or if its because the phone is such a new product and the kinks are still being worked out but the more I jump around and try to take everything in, the more confused and scared I get to use my phone.... I don't want to be scared I spent allot of money to have a Smart Phone but I don't want it Smarter than me!!!!! haha

Don't get me wrong... LOVE IT!!! Just wish I had a better understanding of it. Here is a new book title for ya.... If someone comes out with it as much as I hate to admit it, I would buy it in a heart beat............

"THE MOTOROLLA DROID FOR DUMMIES GUIDE" I won't go into specific issues I am having because I understand there are specific threads that will address them I just have to find them.... Thanks for listening... Anyone else go through this at first? Did you get over it? How did you deal with it any kind thoughts and or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.... again I hope this is not in the wrong spot.

On the Corvette Forum, we have folks that just use their cars as daily drivers and those that pound them on road tracks with banked corners. Similar here, except with Droids. Just start easy and install a free app or two every couple of days, try them out, uninstall if you don't like them. Some are cute but not really needed ("Bubble" - makes your Droid into an electronic bubble level) and some are very useful ("Pandora" - for streaming music). No rush - you've got 2 years until your contract is up and something even more awesome will be available . . .

Skottiesgerl, I'm in your shoes (or rather, going to be), as well. I am about to get my first "smartphone". A coworker told me not to attempt "rooting" and I should be fine. I had to come to these forums to see what "rooting" was. I think I've read every post since. Nuttin left but to do it.

There are some members that do choose to roast the newbies but ignore their replies because they are far outnumbered by members trying to help. Some are even very helpful and roast at the same time but for the most part mean well and are actually joking. um hum Messenger 13!

I am 35 as well, and agree it can be daunting. Here's some tips:

1. Search. I do not say that callously, but if you have an issue, chances are it's been covered. Also, if you post a new thread you may have noticed that it populates similar threads for you to look at before you post a new thread. Also, there are some GOOD pieces of advice in some "newbie" threads. Also, look for threads like "Must have apps" and "must have widgets". Not the correct titles, but you get the point.

2. Take it slow. Literally, install only one or two apps and widgets at a time and monitor performance. That way if you have an issue, you'll know where to look first.

3. Don't be afraid to uninstall an app to see if it fixes a problem. It will be saved in the market under your downloads, and you can easily re-install.

4. Don't be afraid to move away from stock apps for mail, texting, etc.

5. Don't be afraid to ask a question, but put some intelligence behind it. For example "my phone is dead please help me!!!" will not allow anyone to help you. "my phone is stuck at the Motorola boot logo, here is what I have installed and how I got there....." allows the helpful people to help.

Enjoy. Don't be overwhelmed. It takes a lot to screw up the phone to the point where you can't fix it.

December 12 I did not know how to turn it on. Now I can do what I want with Droid.
I have no desire to root because it is nice as it is now
Only download from the Market and you should be fine
Most problems are created by the users, not the apps or Droid.
Just do one thing at a time and you will be fine and do not be afraid to ask questions.

Thanks for your friendly help and support, I almost feel like one of those people who should have started the conversation with... "Hi my name is Lisa and I'm an addict"....droid addict that is...... hahahha. I am sure i will get the hang of it, I'm just an impatient person and HATE IT WHEN I CAN'T FIGURE OUT A PROBLEM........its nice to have a place to come to for help....

No one is ever too old for technology. I was very overwhelmed before I ever GOT my Droid as I was reading as much as I could every day in preparation since I was like 80% sure I was going Droid and not Nexus or any HTC device.

Just ask questions as they come up (keep a notepad on your Droid so you can log 'em as they occur to you!)
