Help How is 4G/3G data service on the Evo 3D?

Sprint just confirmed their deal with LightSquared for a LTE 4G network. I understand the need for advancement but I am a little upset that I will virtually never get to use my WiMax Radio on my Evo3D here in Arizona. We have one small WiMax area in the Phoenix area about 50 miles away from me and there are no plans for WiMax expansion. *sigh* Disappointed.

I'm happy with 3G speeds. I'm ok with it. I love my Evo3D itself, completely happy with it. Just disappointing I'll never get to use that portion of my Evo3D in the area in which I live. I wish they had started including LTE Radio's in their phone in which they know WiMax will be unavailable in a few years. Unless I misunderstand the technology a WiMax phone cannot connect to LTE, right?

Sprint signs a lot of things.

Better to get the popcorn and watch the comedy unfold than give this a moment's concern at this date.

US: LightSquared 4G would have "severe operational impact" on GPS

GPS industry rages: LightSquared 4G network would "defy" laws of physics

I hope they drive a stake through LightSquared's heart, I really do. Anyway - follow the links, see the Pentagon seething with anger over this. Awfully nice satellites they're proposing. Sure hope they don't have any little accidents.

And never forget our _required_ rumors for any 4G launch, WiMAX failing and going away is simply number ten here ;):):

PS - True story, I was there, it was in a popular broadcast industry magazine. Back around 1980, a private firm wanted to launch a comm satellite that the government insisted must not be launched privately. Citing tech, the company launched it anways. It never came online. When asked, the appropriate USgov agency simply replied, Gee - dunno. Anything we launch tends to work.

The replacement was dispatched via paid gov resources and served faithfully for years.

I'm trying to remember the source, but it might have been - Broadcasting Magazine Search Page - Read and Search 2500 issues

Anyway, the entire industry agreed at the time that it quite a coincidence and never spoke of it again.

PS - found it. It was RCA Satcom 3, intended for CNN use.

NASA - NSSDC - Spacecraft - Details

Look it up - RCA actually filed an insurance claim, first ever for that sort of thing. ;)

You know what they say at the skeet range: Pull!

Interesting! I'd really like to see WiMax expansion or at least support. Especially in Phoenix Az. It's horrible here and that's no exaggeration.

I know New York just got a substantial WiMax coverage improvement and Phoenix has been sitting for over a year with basically no coverage at all and no plans for coverage expansion. You can imagine, it's frustrating. As I said before, I am happy with my 3G speeds so it's not something I would, for instance, leave Sprint over. It'd just be nice to use my 4G radio when I wasn't in a WiFi zone.

Basically, I'm hoping for continued WiMax support until Sprint has no more WiMax phones in it's lineup. Doesn't the Evo3D support "WiMax 2"? That might hold possibilities.

This is speculation so take it for what it's worth...

I would guess that sprint will continue to support (and expand) their wimax network for a number of years to come as part of their network vision effort (basically consolidating the various cell towers they have and upgrading the tower hardware to support all the various frequencies and protocols they use). Hopefully they have included support for LTE in their network vision plans.

For LTE I think (hope) the lightsquare deal is just a way for sprint to get started on LTE now... I think their real plan is to use the iden 800mhz spectrum for LTE when they transition their push to talk customers off of iden and onto their CDMA network. However, the iden transition is years away from completion, which sucks, since that iden network is using ultra-lucrative spectrum.

Lightsquared makes me wary... I haven't been impressed with the way they've handled the interference issue. They now say they have a new solution that's supposed to fix the interference issue but the PR on the topic has seemed a bit light in the loafers... I hope sprint found some way to verify their claims before they signed on the dotted line.

If I had to chance to sign that agreement, I would. Then I'd collect penalties when they can't deliver. From the Ars article above -

The FCC technical working group report conclusively shows that LightSquared’s proposed operations defy the law of physics, and therefore simply will not work. The report findings are starkly clear: The only real solution to the LightSquared interference problem is to move out of the MSS band altogether. That’s because going forward with LightSquared’s plans, in all of their various shifting iterations, would cause such widespread harmful interference that it would severely cripple GPS, a national utility upon which millions of Americans rely every day and a critically important tool for a wide variety of industries and government operations that is a mainstay of the U.S. economy.

Yeah, but at the rate lightsquared is going there won't be any money left to collect.

I couldn't tell from that article if the comments were about the deployment plan that failed miserably or if they were talking about the newly proposed plan that lightsquared came up with. I hope the latest plan does work out... but until they actually run that plan thru another test I'm not sure I place much stock in what either side is saying.

Here are my 4G data speeds in Maryland, best I've seen.

From since I have had my 3d, got on 6/19, my 3g speeds have been very poor averaging between 300 and 500 kb, they sued to be about 900kb before. I just did about 10 tests and averaged about 1800 kb. The last test was 2250. My 4g speeds averaged about 7500 kb but have always been excellent and in a similar range. Did Sprint change something I don't know about or was this one of those flukey days when everything is ideal? My company also recently added a 4g tower on top of our building so I get about 10mb of 4g at work - don't ask how..we just got an email about a month ago saying that the Sprint 4g tower was completed.. I tested and got 10 mb where before there was no 4g. I am Jacksonville Florida for the record.

My speeds for 3G and 4G depending on where I am in the general Nashville area have been great overall. I noticed you mentioned that your company received a tower on their building... I wonder if that has anything to do with the mysterious "Corporate 4G" that has been discussed on the forums since the last update.

BTW... Go Titans! :D

In all seriousness I visited your city a few years ago for a game and it was very pretty there and the people were nice. I would love to make it down there again soon.

I just got my 3d yesterday after being an evo user for almost a year. My evo 4g was rooted and running mikmik rom.

I love the 3d so far. It is considerably faster, the battery is way better, and I like the feel more as well.

The only issue I seem to have is it seems like the 3g is considerably slower then it was on my evo 4g. When I am on wifi or 4g it is the same, just really slow on internet or facebook etc when using the 3g connection.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a fix??

Thanks in advance.

This question really can't be answered effectively. I live in an area with "broad" 4G coverage and pretty good coverage overall. I can get greater that 1000bk DL speeds on 3G about 1000 feet from my house yet can't get more than 200kb at home. In that same distance, I can get 3700-4000kb down on 4G but when I get close to my house, it drops off. These numbers vary widely depending on the time of day as well due to tower traffic.

The bottom line is that even within a small area, it is hit or miss depending on distance to tower, interference, and tower congestion.

The Evo 3d was stuck on 1xRTT with the 5xxx PRL. Spring pushed the 28081 PRL update. So update your PRL then dial ##3282#, enter your MSL, go to "Data" then hit "reset"

Walah! I'm back to good 3g speeds finally.

To get your MSL, I simply called sprint and told them I needed the MSL for dev purposes.

For me, updating the PRL didn't fix it, it was the combination of resetting your data profile after updating the PRL. I'm sure everyone knows this but to those of you still frustrated (like me before twenty minutes ago) this is the trick.

I used to pull like 120kbps over the air at my home, now I'm at 900kbps and I have not one signal bar in my home. I have wifi/airave but I turned all that off to test.

http://www.goodandevo.net/2011/11/mysterious-service-update-on-htc-evo-3d-seems-to-bump-up-3g-speeds.html

Anyone noticed anything like what is described here? I am curious if it is similar to the adjustments described in a thread here which some of us, including me, have done. I am on work travel and not following the forum closely now, apologies if this has already been posted and I missed it.

Goodandevo.net is full of half-baked stories like this. It's just one guy's guess, and he's stating it like news. And he happened to correlate an increase in 3G speed to that update. Correlation does not imply causation, as many of you are discovering when you check your speeds and see no difference.
