On a sidenote yet perhaps somewhat related to people's next phone selection, the HTC Incredible is finally getting Gingerbread after months of delay. They are rolling out a patch to fix the first OTA which was problematic, then directly after that, they're rolling out a final patch which is finished GB. Unfortunately, this is causing many people's cache to be too full and it's failing.

I cannot wait for Google/Nexus updates. One of the may reasons my patience level is still doing just fine.

If Google wants the Nexus to be a success (which I'm not so sure they do because I think to them it's just another experiment) they should market the hell out of this phone by showing it's capabilities, and highlight the fact that updates will be regularly pushed out. Heck they could coin a phrase like "future proof". If they do that and sell millions of these, then the next time they have a Nexus to sell, they will have a proven track record of success and will have more clout with the carriers and manufactures, eventually giving us what we want -- a smooth and problem free launch.

Traditionally the UK (and Europe) has been way ahead of the US in terms of mobile phone technology. It's only recently that the US has just about caught up, so perhaps they're still stuck in that mindset.

no S-off is a root term. has nothing to do with sense.

S-off means security is off, and you can flash unsigned (custom) images to the phone.

I know there's a lot of hate for Verizon right now. Some is well founded and some is not, but I put a lot of blame at the feet of Google and Samsung for this. . . . .

Interesting post. I see some of your points, but you can't ignore the fact that Google promised November, and UK is delivering. If there is a problem in the U.S. with November, it falls to the only variable that's not in the equation in Europe: Verizon.

Unfortunately, releasing Android in an open-source format is a two-edged sword. On the one hand, you enrich the dev experience many times over that of Apple lovers. On the other hand, you have no leverage. You can't tell Verizon "Look, if you don't release this by such and such date, we're pulling Android from you", because they effectively don't own Android, even though they create it.

In their devices, HTC have installed a sort of security check whose level is determined by S-OFF/S-ON. Essentially, this security level is a flag stored on the device

What has samsung/google done to botch the launch?!? They are launching UK tomorrow. Same time frame they promised. BMX has said that the phones have been sent to Verizon, at this point there's one finger to point, and it's at Verizon.

For anyone wondering, so far, my experience with the Rezound (for anyone considering one until the GNex comes out) is that whoever stupidly designed its power button and volume controls had to have had love for medieval torture devices. They'd have been better off making those into capacitive buttons given how hard they are to find and press since they are way too flush with the chassis. This is what i get for saying that the RAZR's power button felt a bit cheap, I suppose. Here's hoping for a Goldilocks and the Three Bears ending wherein the GNex's buttons are "just right".
