I need to root my phone. Low On Space is driving me crazy and I can't afford a new phone right now.

I don't know how to backup my whole phone, esp. my games, I fear losing many months of progress. I can only see certain folders through Windows Explorer when it's attached to my computer.

I read and re-read the "how to root" topics but the jargon is over my head. I don't know what a flash, rom or mod is. My last computer course was in 1983.
Is there anyone that can help an old person root a phone? I need rooting for dummies and the help topics assume a certain level of knowledge I don't have.

:thinking::thinking::thinking:

I'll give this a shot, can't be too hard. First things first!

What do you plan to achieve by rooting your phone, and what version of android are you running currently? To find out go to settings, about phone, software information, and tell me both "Android version" and "Software number".

Hi,
I waited to answer because I was inquiring about the free HTC incredible 2 offer they had but I'm not eligible.

I want to get rid of Low On Space, I can't send or receive messages when it's most important. I've been saying no to the updates.

I have Android version 2.2
Software number 3.26.605.1

I'd really love to do this to get rid of that problem, I just can't figure it out on my own.
Thanks for your help!

Okay, then let's give this a shot!

First and foremost, don't rush the process, if you follow the steps exactly there is a 0% chance to brick your phone. It is very rare that a phone will cease to function unless you're trying to achieve that goal.

This will follow the basics of the root thread, but I'll attempt to simplify things and explain what is going on. I apologize if I explain some things in too much detail, I know you said you have a low level of knowledge but I don't mean to offend you with any of these explanations!

If you have htc sync installed on your computer, you'll need to remove that. If you don't know what it is, then you probably don't have it!

Download these drivers needed for your computer to communicate with your phone. Unzip the file by right clicking it and selecting "extract files here".

Now we need to put your phone into hboot to properly install the drivers. hboot is your phone's bootloader that allows you to access recovery and apply 'flash' updates to your phone. Flashing is simply the term used to describe overwriting some part of the phone's system with a new file.

In order to access hboot you'll have to power your phone completely down by holding the power button and selecting the "power off" option. Once your phone is completely off, hold volume down and power until the screen turns on. You should be on a white screen that says 'hboot' at the top.

At this point, plug your phone into your computer. This next part is taken directly from the unrevoked wiki because they explain it really well.

  • Connect the phone to your Windows machine with a USB cable and wait for the phone to say HBOOT USB PLUG on screen.
  • Open Device Manager.
    • Click Start, then right click on Computer, then click Properties, then click Device Manager.
  • Under Other devices, you should now see the Android 1.0 device, similar to the picture below.
devmgr.png

Right click on Android 1.0 and click Update Driver Software. You should then be at the following screen:

browse.png

Click on Browse my computer for driver software.

folder.png

  • Click on Browse and select the Android USB Driver folder on on your computer, click ok, then click next.
  • You should get a status bar indicating that the driver is installing. If you get any warnings, just click Ok.
  • Your driver should install and your screen will look like below.

installed.png

Click Close and make sure Android Bootloader Interface is listed under Android Phone.

end.png

On your phone, make sure 'fastboot' is selected and hit power. Select 'reboot' and hit power again.

Download unrevoked3. This is the tool that will apply S-OFF to your hboot, give you clockwork recovery, and root your phone. By default hboot is S-ON, security-on. That means only official files can be flashed to your phone. By turning S-OFF you gain the ability to flash custom files. In this case, clockwork recovery. Clockwork is an advanced recovery that expands on the stock recovery's features and allows you to flash even more files! In this case, superuser (root).

Download the latest clockwork.

Open reflash_package.exe (unrevoked3). Click file and go to "Custome recovery..." and select the 'recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-inc_PB31IMG.zip' file. This it to make sure unrevoked uses the latest clockwork recovery on your phone.

At this point your phone should be booted up, so go into Settings, Applications, Development, and turn on USB debugging.

Exit back to the home screen and plug your phone in. Select charge only.

Unrevoked should take over and do it's thing. Be patient as your phone will reboot. Wait until unrevoked says it is done!

When it says done, close it and unplug your phone. Open your apps and you should have a 'superuser' app.

Go to Settings, Applications, Development, and turn off USB debugging if it is still on.

Power your phone down again, and boot into hboot by holding volume down + power. At the top it should say S-OFF. If it does, then everything is good to go!

Since you're already in hboot, select 'recovery' and hit power. You'll be greeted by a different recovery than before. This is clockwork!

To navigate, volume up is up, volume down is down, trackpad button is okay, and power is back.

Select 'wipe cache partition' and hit the trackpad button. Select 'yes' and hit the trackpad again to confirm. Do this twice.

Hit the power button to go back, select 'reboot system now' and hit the trackpad again.

Now we need to update your phone to gingerbread! This will give you a feel for what flashing really is and will teach you a bit about your phone.

You'll need to download some files to prepare.

Stock Recovery
Superuser 3.0.7
Gingerbread
Clockwork (you already have this from before!)

We need to make sure your SD card is FAT32, this is a system type that will allow your phone to load the files in hboot.

To do this, plug your phone into your computer and select 'Disk Drive'. Go to "My Computer" and find your SD card. It should be the smaller of the 2 removable drives, usually 1.86 GB in total. Open it, and copy all your files to your desktop so they don't get deleted. Right click the SD card, select 'Format'. A box will pop up, make sure file system says 'FAT32' and select okay. When it is done, copy your files back from your desktop.

In order to update to gingerbread your phone needs to have the stock recovery. Since unrevoked installed clockwork, we're going to have to undo this.

Rename 'Stock-recovery_PB31IMG.zip' to 'PB31IMG.zip'. This is done by right clicking the file and selecting 'rename'. On most computers you will not see the '.zip' part, this is okay. So if you only see 'Stock-recovery_PB31IMG' just rename it to 'PB31IMG'. The '.zip' is just the file extension and is hidden by your system.

Place the newly renamed PB31IMG.zip on your SD card.
(not in any folders).

Power the phone down and enter hboot by holding volume down and power. PB31IMG.zip will be loaded and you will be prompted to install. Navigate with power up/down to select 'yes' and hit the power button.

When it is done, reboot the phone.

When your phone powers on, select 'disk drive' again and remove PB31IMG.zip from your SD card.

Now to apply the update!

Rename '5059e5b6c5b2.OTA_Incredible_C_Gingerbread_S_VERIZON_WWE_4.08.605.2-3.26.605.1_release_222220.zip" to 'update.zip'. Same applies as above. You may not see the '.zip' part!

Put update.zip on your SD card.

Power the phone down and enter hboot by holding volume down and power. If not prompted, navigate into recovery and select to update from update.zip. Sometimes this update gives an error and presents you with a red triangle screen. If this happens, press volume up and the power button to get to the menu. Use volume up/down to navigate to 'run update.zip from sdcard' and hit the power button to begin.

Reboot the phone!

This boot up might take a while, because it is loading your new system. Be patient and when it loads up completely, continue with the steps.

Now you're updated to gingerbread, but we need to get back clockwork recovery so we can flash superuser and get root back!

Find
recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-inc_PB31IMG.zip and rename it to PB31IMG.zip. Select 'disk drive' place it on your SD card.

At this point you have a new feature on your phone called fastboot. We're going to disable this as it prevents entry into hboot. Proceed to Settings/Applications and uncheck it at the bottom.

Power the phone down and enter hboot by holding volume down and power. PB31IMG.zip will be loaded and you will be prompted to install. Navigate with power up/down to select 'yes' and hit the power button. Wait for it to finish, should be very quick. Reboot the phone.

Select disk drive on your phone. Remove PB31IMG.zip from the SD card.

Place Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip on your SD card. You don't need to rename this one!

Power the phone down and enter hboot by holding volume down and power. Navigate into recovery and select 'Install zip from SD card'. Hit the power button. Navigate to yes, and hit the power again to confirm. Reboot the phone.

Select disk drive on your phone. Remove Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip.zip from the SD card.

Check your apps drawer to make sure you have superuser in your app drawer again.

Now you are completely updated to gingerbread, and rooted!

If you have any questions or need anything clarified, feel free to ask. I will attempt to help as best I can to clear anything up. :)

Once you're done with this, we can see how your phone performs and what we can do about that low on space issue.

Wow mmolitor87, fantastic and so labor intensive on YOUR part, I really appreciate your time and help. I'm going to read and re-read a few times to become comfortable first.

I'll also wait to see if you agree with the method-change in the replies or if it'd be better for me to do as originally written. The replies are indeed over my head so please, I'm not offended by potential over-simplification, this is what I need.

Many many thanks!!!

You're very welcome!

The way I explained is completely manual. It keeps your phone's current settings and applications. If that isn't a big deal to you, then you can do as they said.

What they're suggesting is that after you gain S-OFF and root, flash a gingerbread rom. A rom is a complete packaged operating system that a developer makes. Most are based off the current operating system, or ported from other phones.

They suggest you flash the stock gingerbread rom for our phone, which would get you up to date with gingerbread and keep clockwork/root much quicker and in less steps than manually updating like I described above.

If you want to keep your apps and settings and the above method works, then stick to that. If you don't mind setting your phone up again then download this by wildstang over at XDA developers.

Where I say

Now we need to update your phone to gingerbread! This will give you a feel for what flashing really is and will teach you a bit about your phone.

You will no longer be following those directions exact.

Place wildstang83_inc_4.08.605.2_11232011.zip on your SD card. (not in any folders).

Power the phone down and enter hboot by holding volume down and power. Navigate to recovery and hit power to enter.

Once inside clockwork, you want to make a nandroid of your current setup for safety reasons. A nandroid is a backup of your phone that will save every detail on your phone exactly how it is right now in an image file. If you restore from this backup, your phone will go back to every detail of when you made the backup, including text messages.

To make a backup, go to 'Backup & Restore', hit the trackpad, go to 'Backup' and hit the trackpad again! It will take it a bit, when completed hit the power button to go back.

Go to 'wipe cache partition' and hit the trackpad. Select 'yes' and hit the trackpad again. Do this twice.

Go to 'advanced' and hit the trackpad. Go to 'wipe dalvik cache' and hit the trackpad. select 'yes' and hit the trackpad again. Do this twice also.

On the main menu, select 'install zip from sdcard' and hit trackpad. Select
wildstang83_inc_4.08.605.2_11232011.zip and hit the trackpad again. Navigate to YES and hit the trackpad to confirm.

Reboot your system and you can proceed to setup your phone. If you have any issues booting the phone, pull out your battery to power it off and follow the directions again to re-flash the rom. Sometimes they do not take properly, but that is very rare.

I have to go to work now, but I'll be back in the morning. I'm sure iowabowtech and
sdrawkcab25 can help you with most anything you need if I'm not around!

I am doing the long version, I'd like to save settings. I downloaded the drivers, the reflash file, and the clockwork. I followed the instructions but somewhere I missed a phone disconnect.

On your phone, make sure 'fastboot' is selected and hit power. Select 'reboot' and hit power again.

Download unrevoked3. This is the tool that will apply S-OFF to your hboot, give you clockwork recovery, and root your phone. By default hboot is S-ON, security-on. At this point your phone should be booted up, so go into Settings, Applications, Development, and turn on USB debugging.

Exit back to the home screen and plug your phone in. Select charge only.
So, when I double-clicked reflash_package.exe (unrevoked3), I didn't see an option to choose Custom recovery. The unrevoked program was running. The phone rebooted, but the unrevoked window said, "Error, failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?"
I read about this in another thread. I'm thinking I probably should have removed the phone from the laptop at some point but I don't know where.

I'll go read that thread and check back.

(Also my laptop is running WinXP so things are a little bit different, and it kept trying to install new drivers for the phone, I keep saying no and closing the window, could that cause a problem? Thanks.)

If anyone is awake, I'm at the point of running unrevoked again, but it will only search for an image file, not a zip file, so it can't see the zip. I'm going to try unzipping it and selecting the image file...

EDIT WOOHOO, I have superuser...
But when I boot into HBOOT it says S-ON.
I went ahead and wiped the cache partition twice. I'm stopping here for now. Will wait to figure out S-ON/S-OFF problem before moving on.

Thanks!!!

You can proceed without doing that step, you'll get the latest clockwork back later anyways. I just wrote that in to be as up to date as possible for the whole process.

Firmware too new? Have never seen that before. I would try it again. As long as you didnt accept ota updates you should still be on 2.2, if you did accept an update that changes things . If you don't know, make sure under settings and about phone, and software information it still says Android 2.2.

You will just need to go to unrevoked's website and download unrevoked forever. It's just a small file that you would install in recovery.

Download http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever.zip and put it on your sdcard. Boot into recovery and flash from zip. At work, so cant detail atm. Just the steps for installing superuser at the end of my detailed post. Just use this file instead.

Do not continue without s-off! It can be very useful later and the process for gaining s-off in gingerbread is very extensive.

Installing Gingerbread was very tricky, many problems due to Low On Space issue.
However, after about 6 tries and deleting moving lots of apps, it worked.
I wound up also selecting the "wipe cache" in the clockwork thing, just in case it would help, knowing that it could have unwanted data loss.

It finally took, about 15 minutes to install Gingerbread. I've lost my app icons but my contacts and messages are intact. Will work on that stuff later.

Thank you so much, hopefully I can keep going until I get rid of Low On Space problem.

Edit:

I'm unable to do the last step. When I go into hboot, instead of getting to clockwork, I get a red triangle. So I hit the vol. up and power buttons to get to the menu, and there are 4 options, reboot, update.zip, wipe the cache and something else.

However, I still have Superuser Permissions in my apps from before. Is this good enough? It's just a black screen with Preferences on the menu

Thanks!
