Help Lots of pictures have disappeared

Okay, so I was looking through my gallery before and I noticed that a lot of pictures have gone missing from my Xperia Play. Does anybody know where they could have gone? There are some precious pictures that I wasn't too keen on losing on there to.

I regularly have my phone hooked up to my computer, is it likely a copy of my pictures are on my laptop? ( I would check, but my brother has taken it away on a study trip, great).

There are a lot of discussions on this topic already. Most likely those pictures just disappear from the Gallery view thus are not really lost from your phone. So don't be panic.

The Google thread Issue 13419 - android - New pictures disappear in Gallery - Android - An Open Handset Alliance Project - Google Project Hosting have a lot of discussions. Some people say the photos reappear later by themselves, others say a phone reboot might help.

If you don't want to wait for the magic to happen, you can try to find them under /sdcard/DCIM using a file browser. You can also download a free or paid app from Android Market (Google Play) to manage your photos and files.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your response. Yeah, I have looked at a lot of the previous threads that's have been posted in regards to a similar situation. However, I felt that they weren't necessarily exactly the same situation as I am having. For example, the thread you post above did reassure me but I noticed the poster referred to new photos. My problem consist of older photos (from last summer, for example) just vanishing.

Thank you for your advice though, I'm a bit of a tech-phone when it comes to the complicated stuff, could you please give me some instruction as to how to put some of your suggestions into action?
Thank you so much

For the option of "try to find them under /sdcard/DCIM using a file browser", on my phone there is an app "My Files", with which I can navigate through the file system. Your phone must have an app like that (Just like the Windows File Explorer). You can also find lots of free ones from the market like ES File Explorer and ASTRO File Manager.

Once you have such an app, you can navigate to /sdcard (normally it is the default start folder) then go to sub-folder DCIM. /sdcard is the internal storage containing all OS files, and apps/user files.
