What is the best alternative keyboard? Non-rooted. If I touch O and get three Ps one more time it may get smashed against the wall. The screen also seems to lose calibration but all I have to do is turn the screen off and on as a fix.

Also I still haven't figured out why my phone loses it connection and must be restarted in order to make calls again.

Other than that I am getting used to it through all the bugs.

Didn't want to say that but I can type very fast on the iPhone but I have slow way down on the n1.

Have to say that I agree with this. Typing on Android is a big let down, too much lag, poor correction (like when typing quickly for instance eevn instead of even, even won't come up as a replacement) and for some reason it seems easier to hit the wrong key even though the screen is larger.

I wish this would be improved as it is the largest negative for me.

OP - maybe give this kb a try... it's much improved over its initial release a couple months ago... whoever is tweaking it is listening to the users... now up to v18...

[APP MOD] HTC_IME Keyboard (19th March) v18: Smileys - xda-developers

i hated it initially, but my frustration with the nexus kb has prompted me to give it another try... so far it's not bad (make sure enable the "show candidates bar" in the settings... makes it much more usable, as the suggestions no longer block the text you are currently typing - something the initial versions of this didn't do...)

cheers

PS: forgot to add that the HTC IME keyboard also has a calibration tool... that might also help with typing accuracy...

I was getting pretty used to the stock android keyboard, landscape was going pretty smoothly.
But when I found out about the htc alternative I switched and havn't looked back (mainly because the spellchecker supports my language :p)
The settings are a bit confusing here, they seem to get mingled with the stock keyboard settings and the functionnality of every setting isn't always as clear.. But once you're set up and have (auto-)added enough words you'll be texting faster then ever.

I love how people blame the keyboard and don't look at other factors. How you hold the phone and how fast you are trying to type while doing what can also have a huge influence on how the keyboard responds.

fair point but have you typed a lot on an iPhone? its not just a little bit better in certain circumstances, it is markedly better than the nexus in all situations.

I. don't know what it is, I am guessing a mixture of hardware and software but even now after a couple of months with my nexus I'm barely achieving half the speed I could on the iPhone after just a single week of use.

it could very well be the multi-touch that apple uses for the keyboard... something that the Nexus does not use.... try it... on an iphone, you can press one key and holding it, you can press another and it will enter that character also... on a Nexus... no go...

im a default keyboard man myself but i might give swype a try i already tried the htc ime and found that i was less acurate with it than with the stock so i deleted it. Honestly i think it all comes down to personal preference

did you ever use the calibration tool that is built in? i didn't do this the first time I tried it like a month ago... fast forward a bunch of version bumps (they are up to 18)... and this time, I tried it again (the stock kb was really starting to annoy me), and use the calibration tool feature right off the bat and have been super happy so far...
