cracked screen

well, got my s3 last friday and this morning i somehow cracked the screen. dont know how i did it but i know it wasnt dropped. i am waiting to hear if it is covered by bank insurance as i didnt take any out with tmobile (yes, i know, STUPID STUPID STUPID). anyway if it turns out that im not covered does anyone know of any places in the uk that can replace the screen.

If there has been no impact, it could possibly be a manufacturing defect. I dont want to get your hopes up but before a repair shop voids your warranty, definitely talk to Samsung support first

Bloke at work had his delivered, the seal on the box had been broken, and the screen on the phone was cracked too!

Could it have resulted from an impact at work?
If it cracked this fast and it didn't recieve any impacts however it could very well be a production flaw and it should be covered. Small tip: Always put the phone in your trousers with the screen facing your leg, so no pointy objects can reach the screen.

While the gorilla glass itself is quite strong the screens underneath are still quite fragile. The gorilla glass is just added to prevent scratching.

The gorilla glass is essentially the digitiser. The thing that translated touch into input. Without it, the phone would not be "touch screen".

Its important to distinguish what the screen is and what the digitiser is. The screen is visual only. If cracked, there would be colour leak all over.

The digitiser is glass and sits a mm above the screen. A crack would not effect operation of touch input or be much of a visual impairment.

On most devices, these parts can be bought separately but I'm not sure here. Looks like the whole front.


So which is cracked?

According to this guy who's taken the S3 apart, the whole front part of the phone is sandwiched together using strong adhesive. Meaning, that if you break the screen you're going to have a hell of a job replacing it... probably easier to replace the whole phone.

The Gorilla glass is very hard to resist scratches which mean it is brittle and WILL break. The other choice is to make it soft where it will scratch but will bend instead of breaking under impact

The phone is just out and it would be a while before people had parts to fix and even if they did the cost would likely mean just replacing the phone.

sorry i havnt got back sooner. the screen underneath seems ok (no pixalisation or anything amiss) i think i may have damaged the screen in my pocket on the way home. there does seem to be a bit of impact damage but that could be from pressing something into the screen. didnt take out insurance with tmobile because i am covered for two phones with my bank. have already been onto them.

No its strong against impacts as well.

this guy barely scratches at the iphone, but tries to murder the GS3 and it ends up fine.

Also ignore any vids from user course1337 as he uses the same broken phone in every one of his "test" videos and conveniently moves the camera away so you cant see the switch (must be another ifan bothered by the GS3 with GG2)

I had mine for 24hrs and went to buy a case at Wal-Mart. Of course they didn't have any. Went to the bathroom on my way out and had no pockets so I stuck the phone under my armpit. Sure enough it fell out slid down my leg as I tried to stop out but shattered anyways. Screen is very fragile. Like the original EVO (tons of broken screens), do not drop it. I have a otterbox defender on my replacement.

My S2 has fallen out of my suv several times with no problems

The ONLY way the display will fracture is if a USER does something to cause the display to fracture. There is no mystery here. Period. End of discussion. Learn to use and care for your device responsibly. If the display breaks, guess what, YOU broke it.

I've had my S3 since beginning of July and the screen is still perfectly clean and clear (except one tiny minute little scratch but that's due to me not getting a screen protector). Anyway to the op I hope Samsung is able to help you out because it sure seems like a manufacturer defect. My regards!

Thanks captain obvious. No one is saying otherwise but it would be good for people not to be lured into false sense of security with the gorilla glass deal. Some phones crack way easier than others and this is just an exchange of information so people know what they are dealing with. Everyone does not carry their phone around like a loaf of bread and even some that do still have a clumsy moment.

My wife stepped in an ant bed today before getting in her car. They didn't start biting until she was in the car. As she rushed to get out her phone fell 2ft to the ground and cracked. I'm sure many people have had their phone fall out of the car without breaking. No one is asking for free replacements or complaining about the phone. Just relaying info.

And fwiw you can't say for sure that an s3 couldn't have a defect and break on its own. Has happened to phones before.

I would say that barring data on every device sold, it is entirely possible for a screen to crack without any impact. Not likely, but certainly within possibility. Though not gorilla glass, I had a screen on an old Canon camera crack while sitting on top of a TV in a hotel room. It was perfect when it was put down and severely cracked several hours later. Not touched or moved between the 2 events. Good luck OP getting resolution to your issue!

i would take it as being irresponsible to think having gorilla glass is license to be careless.

apple has sold their porcelain iphones to 10 of millions of people. its even more fragile than any android phone including the s3.

you buy a case, you get insurance, and overall you just need to be more careful with your device.

I'm not sure if that is true. Somebody has posted a drop test on youtube of an S3 vs iphone and the iphone came out of it much better. I think I have heard as well that if your iphone gets broken that Apple will swap it out for a not unreasonable price.

I agree with this. I have just bought an S3 and love the phone. I will buy a decent case and make sure I look after it.

there's a video of a women doing all sorts of stuff to an s3 and it comes out working and without a scratch as well as videos with iphones get totally trashed.

i dont even look at those drop tests anymore because it makes no sense that in one video a phone comes out just fine and in another video the gets trashed while going through the same test. android will replace your broken phone as well.

bottomline, take care your stuff or its gonna get broken.
