Help New micro sd card

I am looking to upgrade from the 8gb card that came with my evo v.
Any recommendations for brand?
Is class number important? Class 4 good enough?
There are some good deals on amazon for 16gb Kingston or Sandisk class 4. Wondering if I should spend more for more capacity or/and speed.

I just got a 32 gig SanDisk on Amazon for $20. Sweet spot. You'll pay a lot more for a 64 gig and won't save much dropping to 16 gig. I wouldn't worry about the speed, that's mainly for high end cameras.

the class of card matters TO ME because I record a lot of HD video and I don't want to sit at my PC waiting for gigabytes of footage to transfer at really slow speeds.

I have a 16gb class 10 and its fairly quick moving data off the card.


the only time you really need a fast SD card is if you KNOW you will be pulling or pushing a LOT of data into the card and you don't want to wait for it.

class 4 and class 6 are suitable for FULL HD recording, thats 1080p. we are doing HALF that bandwidth because we can only do 720p.

nothing else this phone can do will use up more bandwidth than video recording. so if thats not your priority, class 4 or 6 will be good for you.

your only problem might be the initial loading of gigs and gigs of music onto it, but once they are on the card they are not going anywhere right?

buy the card that fits your needs and try not to over-spend.

I do a little video recording when my daughter does something super cute. And I typically just let it take its time uploading to Dropbox on wifi. Then it is on my computer without me having to do anything
I don't even have much music on the card since I can stream from amazon and google. It is apps that filled my space quickly.
So it sounds like I will be fine with the cheaper class 4 cards. I see there is a 32gb Sandisk class 4 for $20 on amazon. Does brand matter? I see kingston and transcend as well.
What about xc and hc1 designations?

This might be overkill, but it was only a little more than a Class 4 and I wouldn't mind a little more speed, especially on photos/videos. But I am unsure of UHS-1 and if it will work with the Evo V. Any ideas?

It's a great choice, I have the 64GB version. It's fully compatible with the phone however we don't support UHS so it'll be a class 10 card. But we're future proof.

I just got my 32gb sandisk ultra sd card from amazon for like $25. The sd card preparing time on the phone is way faster than the 8gb it came with. I think 32gb is far enough for a phone. I have 3 3d movies like total around 8gb, 2~3gb music, 1~2gb of games and photos and stuff. And I still have 15+gb free for use.

Our phones don't support low voltage operation or quad bit ddr so we're limited to the older class 10 standard that specifies 10 MB/sec write speed instead of the 30 MB/ sec specific to UHS-1.

So is UHS something that we may see in a CyanogenMod or other future ROM release? Specifically, can it be upgraded at the kernel or driver level, similar to how older SD card readers can be updated to SDHC? Or is it a hardware level change?

No it's a hardware issue, whether the phone can support a card larger than 64 gb isn't known but UHS is a definite no.
